Create customized desktop folder icons from pictures, files, folders, or .icns documents.
Folder Icon X application provides an easy way to create custom folder icons and document icons by placing another icon on a standard plain icon. Users can set custom folder icons for both close and open states. It fully supports drag & drop, picture-to-icon, icon-to-picture, live icon resize, reading-writing in ".icns" format, and can load any icons from any files or folders. All generated icons are 32-bit Mac OS X-compatible icons which can be viewed on both Classic Mac OS and Mac OS X. Folder Icon X also allows users to manage icons of files and folder through the Finder by using the contextual menu plugin. The contextual menu allows users to add customized icons, remove icons, save icons as pictures, and more. Folder Icon X has 9 languages: English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, Swedish Polish, Danish and Dutch.
PowerPC application - Incompatible with current MacOS

Pros
I used to use this app a lot, before the developer ceased supporting / maintaining it.
Cons
Unfortunately, the developer has not updated the app for several years — long enough for it to no longer be compatible with the modern MacOS (Lion or Mountain Lion). The only way I can run the app now is via VMware Fusion running an emulated PowerMac. Understandably, this makes using the app rather a PITA, and renders it pretty useless.
I am dismayed and surprised that the developer has not bothered to update this app for Mountain Lion — I would buy it!

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />I'm really picky about icon creation and after a lot of searching on VT I've come back to Folder Icon X (was using a freeware CM not supported on intel). Not only has Folder Icon X improved, its also Universal Binary; I'm grateful to the Dev for maintaining the app and would recommend it to anyone needing a fine tune app for custom folder icons.

And I can't think of a better supported app since the introduction of OSX 10.0. The functionality of the contextual menu items are one of the special bonuses.
Does what it says it does.

It will start replacing folder icons all over your drive with icons you never selected. Very bad code and a crappy interface to boot.<i>
Stick with Folder Icon X.

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />Stormchild's comments are incorrect in my view. This developer is very active in supporting the various products available. He continually tweaks them but no one is standing around twisting anyone's arm to download them.
That said I'd like to see him update the Photoshop plug-in to Photoshop CS. I believe he stopped development due to lack of interest circa Photoshop 6 (Classic). If updated to CS it would be an inexpensive option (I've long since registered it) to other plug-ins/filters which use Photoshop. Given his ingenuity and continued support for this app, Launch Items X and others I'd like to see him pick that one up again.
This is a great little app which does precisely what it says it will do, has a lot of functionality, a good UI, and is indispensible for its specific purpose IMHO. I think I've registered every product this vendor has provided to the OSX (and previously) and OS9 communities. Thank you.
My only fear is that he has too many irons in the fire and works continually on improving all products over the span of years. Wish we had more like him. :)

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />The updates noted by developer seem to work fine. While I'd agree with Foto555 (and also Courtney) in general, I've given it a high rating several times in the past. That doesn't mean I don't like to see other users requesting new features. This vendor is forever updating this and his other apps. I've used his software for at least 4 years.
Want other featuresw? I have Icconizer Pro X, his product, (also Launch Item X, although I prefer DragThing and Fruit Menu), Photoshop, IconBuilder Pro (PS plug-in for 50 or 60 bucks from Icon Factory), GraphicConverter, Icongrapher (decent, but his comparable product is a better buy in terms of value), and other icon tools I don't recall offhand. I'm not a serious icon creator. Am strictly a hobbyist. I have a fair amount of money invested in Iconinzer Pro X, IconBuilder Pro, Iconographer, et al, but this one I use more than others combined.
For a "windoze" developer he spends a good deal of time on Mac products. ;) I get more custom alert update notices from VT on his updates than any other vendor on my list of 100+ on VT. Have never seen this vendor write anything but good, solid and well supported products. It obviously would not have the large number of comments on VT if it weren't.
No, am not his mother. ;)
A bit more creativity...

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />I agree with Ryan Becker's comment about FinderIconCM, but it's really not a fair comparison. FinderIconCM is a contextual menu addition, and it's mighty useful -- in fact, it's really in a class by itself. I use it every day.
But Folder Icon X is in a different league. It has way more functionality as an icon design app than FinderIconCM, which really doesn't make any claim to the same turf. If you're serious about your iconic eye candy (and I am!), Folder Icon X is one great little tool that you probably will want in your toolbox. Narat's support is first-class, and he's very conscientious about updating his software.
