• A serious flight simulator!

  January 20, 2015

  Pros

  - it is free as in beer, you can get it without paying a cent! - it is free as in speech, as it is an open source project, developed by the community to the community - if you don't find a feature you like, you can request it to the developers or help to implement yourself - it is in constant development, new releases are being added all the time (a new version 3.4 will be release in Feburary 2015) - makes use of 64-bit (as opposed to "certain" other civilian sims) - the graphics are getting better and better with each release. The current version has some amazing effects when the Atmospheric Light Scattering is turned on, the sky colours are incredible realistic - very lightweight on computer resources, can run really well in older machines and notebooks. - a wide range of airplanes, some of which are fantastic (the Cessna 337, Robin DR400 and Boeing 777 are absolutely fantastic!) - the weather system is fantastic!

  Cons

  - some aspects of the graphics are still behind the current generation of games, particularly the scenery (too many straight lines and simple polygons). That said, there has been some real improvements in this regard. - fancier graphic options can be a bit buggy (Rembrandt mode doesn't work well with my computer, and Atmospheric Light Scattering causes some flickering in the menus - but remembering that both are still not fully implemented. Hopefully both will improve in version 3.4) - some aircraft are not as detailed as others. The default Cessna 172, for instance, does not have the best 3D cockpit in FlightGear. - the menus and the GUI could be much better

  Summary

Get it, try it and support it. It's free after all, and you shouldn't even be bothering reading a review when you can simply test it by yourself!

• Good, 100% free, with great possibilities

  Pros

Many interesting lightweight homebuilt airplanes (Long-EZ, Quickie, Cri-Cri), ultralights and early planes. They all behave differently, as they should.

  Cons

You cannot use it on a laptop; you need a standard keyboard or a flying stick. I don't know why engines don't start when plane is on the ground. Graphics are minimal, though adequate.

  Summary

As someone formerly involved with the homebuilt movement I love flying all those UL and experimentals. Instructions are a little lacking: I haven't figured out yet how to start the engine (I have to set the plane "in the air" even though it is on the runway to get the engine running). Beyond the runway, graphics are merely a blurry representation. It took me some trying to get the extra planes installed. There are several intermediate screens that I still don't know what they are for. I just go trough them.

• Poor graphics, ultra basic.

  Pros

It is small and very easy on the system resources.

  Cons

It reminds me of the stuff you saw 20 years ago, too minimalist. Didn't find any manuals or explanations.

  Summary

Maybe experienced pilots could use this, I can't tell, but it is useless for learing or entertainment.

• Can't get to run on XP

  aastrotechJune 20, 2009

  Pros

Looks like it could be good if it worked for me.

  Cons

Earned the money to pay for flight lessons, took the flight lessons and got a private pilot's license in less time than I spent trying to get this to work on XP. Still won't work.

  Summary

Can't get it to run on XP, 2.7 Ghz Intel proccessor, latest Open GL , 64 Mb graphics memory, latest fgrun. Many hours study of available manuals and online resources. Still trying.
