This game lets you play five variations of poker against human or computerized opponents. Fat Cat Poker offers a few popular poker games, including Seven-Card Stud, Five-Card Draw, and Texas Hold 'Em. Although the application lets you play either network or online games against other warm bodies, most folks will probably opt for the single-player mode. In that case, you'll find yourself at a poker table with $200 in your pocket and four animated talking opponents. You can't alter the amount of cash in your bankroll or configure the maximum bets, but you can choose to change the game after each hand. The rest of Fat Cat Poker's feature set is equally satisfying, allowing you to select from a few poker rooms, change the card style, switch the characters around, or disable the audio commentary. Since the dealer walks you through the betting process each hand, even newbies will be able to figure out what's going on. Besides the short five-use trial, this program's biggest downfall is its questionable stability. In our tests, the app froze a few times. And when we tried to pull up another program from our taskbar while the game was running, we found its characters superimposed over the new window. Still, we'd guess most poker fans can find something to like about this piece of software.
This game features some really funny computer opponents, and the game play is pretty smooth. The dealer announces the hand as the game progresses, just like in Vegas. The only drawback to this game is the AI engine. For example, the computer incorrectly computes the "high spade in the hole" in High Chicago, and betting is rather reckless in all the games. Not a very good simulation for the serious player, but lots and lots of fun for the novice. A+++ on entertainment value.
