Editors’ Review
Facebook Pro is a desktop client for accessing Facebook outside of a web browser. If there's one thing we hate, it's software that doesn't offer any functionality you can't already achieve with existing programs. Why clutter your hard drive with unnecessary software? Unfortunately, Facebook Pro is exactly that: unnecessary software. The program is essentially just a web browser displaying Facebook and a few other links. We didn't see the point, and we doubt you will, either.
We installed Facebook Pro, and it took us to the Facebook login page. After logging into our Facebook account, we saw our news feed, profile, and chat contacts. It looked exactly like the Facebook we use daily in our web browser. A button labeled "Facebook Home" returned us to our news feed from other pages, something easily done by clicking the large Facebook button in the upper-left corner of Facebook itself.
We clicked the "Facebook Pro X-tras" button, hoping for something useful, but we were disappointed. It simply contained links to the Facebook Pages home page, the Facebook blog, and books about Facebook on Amazon—things we could access easily through our regular web browser. The publisher promised Facebook Pro could display in Lite and Mobile modes, which could have been useful, but we couldn't find any way to do that. There's no Help file, either, but that's not surprising, considering there's not much you could need help with.
User feedback on Facebook Pro is mixed, with some individuals finding its direct, standalone access to Facebook useful, particularly for avoiding browser-related distractions. However, others have highlighted high memory usage and the lack of advanced features as limitations, particularly for users who need multitasking support or additional functionality. As a standalone desktop app, Facebook Pro may suit users who prioritize basic Facebook access without needing to switch between browser tabs. However, for those who frequently interact with multiple applications or need additional features, Facebook Pro’s limitations might be a drawback.
For users looking to get the most out of Facebook Pro, managing other running applications can help free up memory and improve performance. Running Facebook Pro on systems with sufficient RAM may enhance the user experience, as the app’s memory requirements can strain older or lower-end hardware. Closing unnecessary programs while using Facebook Pro is also recommended to prevent lags or slow responses, especially for users who multitask.
Bottom Line
Alternatives to Facebook Pro offer options for users with different needs and device capabilities. Facebook for Windows 10, for example, provides a more integrated experience with the Windows operating system, allowing for improved integration with system notifications and settings. This app is designed specifically for Windows, which can make it a more cohesive option for users who want native compatibility with their device.
Another alternative is Facebook Lite, which is targeted toward users on lower-end devices or with slower internet connections. Facebook Lite focuses on low data usage and reduced memory consumption, which can be advantageous for users who are concerned about resource management. Each alternative offers unique benefits, depending on the user’s specific requirements for performance, system compatibility, or data usage.
