Unless you already considered yourself well-versed in the mathematics and science of sound, you'll face a rather steep learning curve when using Expression Tone Generator. Basically, this program lets you create sound effects based on mathematical equations you write using certain values such as sine, cosine, and tangent. The nonresizable interface is no beauty, but since this program only does one job, it's not too tough to find your way around. The application comes with a couple of preloaded equations as examples, but unless you're already knowledgeable in this field, you'll have to consult the help file to even have the slightest clue as to how to write one of your own. Still, the tool that shows you the notes of the scale and the frequency numbers did prove to be somewhat helpful to us, and we were eventually able to generate a couple of wild sound effects simply by trial and error. If you get a sound you really like, you can save it as a WAV file. Although it could benefit from a tutorial and more detailed help files, Expression Tone Generator might be a worthy download to musicians or folks involved in audio production, especially since it's free.
This is some thing my 9 year simply tone line up veborlater
glens
Pros
you know wright some kiddly numbers to see that basic torn
<p>its a kids game
<p>old school
<p>in other words your mouse that you use today has the same code
<p>but in line up form say you make 1 da the mouse ario would go to the corner of the monitor 2 would make go to the left hand corner 3 right hand 4 bottom left
Cons
now what dose this have to do with this software
<p>torns are numbers in a chart that you plot
<p>every windows media player has a stabolizer
<p>that match the sound so in any case you put your own sound by puting in the number by simply math oh and thowe in the colors
<p>its a grafe ! ok for you idits
<p>it simply for kids
Summary
Extremely powerful. (Physics student review)

Pros
No matter what they say, basic high school knowledge is more than enough to get you started. And if you`re studying Maths or Physics, with this software you can out-trance Tiesto in no time. Basically, it provides a script language which consists of the basic expressions connected with sound (sin, cos, exponent etc.) plus a few "shortcuts" and extra logical functions which allow you to arrange your sound on a time scale - these are explained in the Help docs. You can greatly improve your sound by adding harmonics and modulation, and - after direct export to WAV - use another program to match to the tempo of your favourite sampler. Of course, this would take a lot of time if you wanted to script every sample from scratch; but with wise use of variables, you can automate most tasks and create new sounds by merely re-defining values. This product can create really magnificient background layers and string-like instruments, as well as strange sound effects; the possibilities are limited only by your imagination and knowledge.
Cons
Despite what the docs state, the time variable *is* measured in seconds; if you feel different, this is because the time counter is forward compared to the actual sound due to hardware capabilities (but it`ll be all right in the exported WAV). There`s no "save as" command, so you need to be careful not to save over your old file accidentally. The main window is a bit too small, which makes it more convenient to write script in Notepad and copy&paste. Perhaps, this program is not for you if you`re a hardcore humanist.

it generated some good sounds but its not the easyest thing to use because its all text

it's brilliant to generate tones via textual input rather than the usual knobs and sliders. the right-click option box in the text input field comes quite handy, and you can render up to 44kHz. Nice choice.

ETG is simple, and it's this simplicity that makes it successful. Csound has been around for some time now, and while it is genuis material, lacks the warmth and comfort GUI provides. A basic understanding of digital sound processing is required for this program. Sound is just a bunch of superimposed sine waves any how. Understand that, and creativity is unlimited.
Create impressive sound effects using algebraic expressions.Expression Tone Generator is an ideal tool for creating impressive sound effects using the power of math. The application writes algebraic expressions using sound-related built-in functions (osc, wave, note, and tone) and allows you to hear them quickly with one keystroke. It includes a graph display for wave preview and a note/octave to frequency converter. A full set of arithmetic and logical operators and trigonometric, transcendental functions are included, enabling complex wave definition at any sample rate. Fast evaluation is achieved through an internal expression compiler, performing near C efficiency. Generated waves can be saved as WAV files. Formula files can be saved and retrieved for later use. This tool is suitable for composers, electronic musicians, sound researchers, game programmers, and anyone interested in learning more about the fascinating link between math and sound.
