EpocCam is an iOS app for converting your iDevice's camera into a high-definition PC webcam. There's a free version and also an upgrade to the HD version for $4.99. To use EpocCam you need to download an app on your iDevice, as well as a driver for Windows or Mac OS X on your computer (laptop or desktop). We installed the Windows drivers from the publisher's Web site, then downloaded the iOS app on our iPhone. Both installations went easily, although we did go to the publisher's Web site to watch the how-to videos first (which makes installation a lot easier!).

Once EpocCam is set up, launching the Windows or Mac OS X app opens a simple window. Launch the iOS app and the two connect wirelessly. Before you know it, your iPhone is acting as a webcam and a microphone for your larger device. When we first tried it and it simply worked right away we were happily surprised. You can switch between front and back cameras with a simple touch of the screen. The full paid version of EpocCam supports 720p video, which makes it about as good as any dedicated USB plug-in webcam available on the market.

We are really impressed with EpocCam. We ripped out our elaborate webcam and microphone setup on our Windows desktop PC, and now use EpocCam exclusively for Sykpe and other video conferences. Almost without exception, the one response we get from everyone who sees this setup is "cool!", and we agree completely. This is one app that's worth the money and just plain useful.
