• Endnote X4 for Mac cannot support Chicago 15 or 16

  Customer support admits product is fatally flawed with respect to Chicago 15 and 16 and that Thompson has not intent to fix it

  Cons

  Product is hardwired to override its own menu choices. There is no work around if you want to repeat authors names instead of using a dash when an author's name repeats in a citation or in consecutive citations.

  Summary

• Buyer Beware! Not compatible with MS Word

  X4 for Mac not compatible with Word 2011, Thomson Reuters states that perhaps it will be in about 6 months after Word 2011 release. This is unacceptable... Lack of technical support for product.

  Summary

  Release of X4 for Mac is not compatible with Word 2011. This is most unfortunate as this is the software that X4 is supposed to interface with. Appears to be non-issue for PCs, but the ball was dropped for Mac users. No support. Best to look at alternative apps. This may prove to be a major public relations disaster for Thomson Reuters, unfortunate for what has been good software in the past.

• Absolutely Awful

  Very Little - Does have greater compatibility with the PC version than other reference management systems. Seems marginally better than prior versions. UK distributors at least gave a refund!

  Crashes more often than not. No innovation in latest version. Web searches do not work as they do on the web equivalent site.

  Absolutely Awful - Sente seems much more stable; it doesn't have Cite While you Write (CWYW), but then again EndNote's CWYW crashes virtually every time anyway. Having previously used EndNote fairly reliably on a PC, I bought it for Mac before the 'X versions'. That version rarely worked, but given the hype about the newest refined X2 version and CWYW fixes, I paid again for the latest update (another £75 or so!). It is every bit as buggy, and has virtually no innovation over previous versions. In contrast, I am now looking at Sente, which lacks the much hyped integration with Pages, but will produce bibliographies for Pages outwith the application itself after inserting easily formatted citations. Sente also features a much more intuitive interface, web search facilities that actually work, and a great system for linking downloaded PDF files to the citation database. It can be a little slow opening my 50k database, but not intolerably. Unlike EndNote, it also has a trial. I have to reinforce what others have said about a complete lack of Quality control from the EndNote developers for Mac, which is amazing given the extortionate prices and update charges. I am disappointed that Apple have tied themselves in with this company, and can only hope that they also open up 'Pages' integration for software developers that have a track record of interest in the Mac - Sente and Bookends for example, which I understand are both better than EndNote, but could be better still with Pages integration. Only thing I will say for EndNote, is that their UK distributor at least was supportive and did give me a refund.

Citations where a foundation is the author rather than a typical surname comes out as Foundation, The Name of. and I cannot get it right. Previously it has crashed and destroyed entire bibliographies. It is more trouble than it is worth.

I've been using it intensively for the last few days and I'm probably getting about a dozen crashes a day. Maybe more. Always when doing searches, generally of PubMed, but also of the Endnote library itself. This same thing happens on my G4 iMac running 10.3.9. This is so frustrating. Please, please, PLEASE don't bother adding any more features to this application until you've fixed the 'features' already present. This has the potential to be a really useful piece of kit for Mac users but at the moment it is simply irritating to use.

  This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />I have used Endnote versions 2, 5, and 6. Generally, the higher the number, the worse the program functioned. I had no intention upgrading again, and had switched to Bookends (itself a very good product). However, the lure of cross-platform integration was too strong and I found myself using Endnote 9. After years of suffering through bloated, buggy software, I was pleasantly surprised to find that Endnote 9 seems to have put to rest most of the problems caused (possibly) by shifting to OSX. The program is fast (Iâ??m using it with Word Office X on a 1.5 GHz Powerbook). To test its speed, I imported 5000 references (including keywords and abstracts) I downloaded from an online database. The file was 6.4 MB, but took less than 4 minutes to import. Even with such a large number of references, it sorts and scrolls quickly. In the year Iâ??ve been using it, it has yet to crash. A welcome feature for multi-lingual researchers is its support for Unicode. It is not without its quirks, though. When exporting lists of references to my Word document, I find it uses a random mixture of serif and sans-serif fonts, something which is annoying, but not time consuming to reformat. I also find it annoying that when entering information about an online source the URL box is always far enough down on the list that I have to scroll down to find it. It would seem to make sense to have the URL for Web documents near the top, as itâ??s always included whereas date and author often are not. Nonetheless, the makers of Endnote are to be congratulated for sticking with the Mac OS and finally creating a solid OSX version of their program.

  This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />I've used EndNote since 1.0. It's still useful. But it still has serious limits. 1. Saving a reference in certain cases (e.g., creating new) does NOT always result in having that reference highlighted/selected after it is closed. 2. This is a continuing, serious problem: The "undo" function, when entering text into a reference, seems to not work at *all.* This is a terrible problem, especially if a large amount of text has been deleted in error! 3. The "Search Whole Library" does not show the "add to showing references" even when you *need* it to. You change the author...and can't add. 4. It still appears that the search window does not automatically switch to a different data base, if you activate that data base's window then turn back to the search window. 5. If you save, does new name go up in title bar? NOT in version 8 and still not in version 9. 6. EndNote 9 won't save the defaults for searching that would be useful, such as What field you are searching for.

  This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />As a loyal EndNote user since it was owned by Niles I have seen many improvements in this product and survived their near disasterous port to OS X. EndNote 9 works just fine and is very stable. I have used X now for about a week. It provides minor improvements to the interface. Most notable is the ability to drag and drop pdfs onto a record. This means that all of your records will be directly and easily linked to your pdfs. However, this feature is incomplete. A. Although you can see an icon of the pdf when you open your record, you cannot drag and drop it anyplace -- you can only open it. This means that to send it to a friend via email that you must open the pdf or find the endnote pdf directory via the Finder. B. When you drop a pdf onto a record, EN creates a new version of that pdf. I have about 500 pdfs organized in a library file on my desktop by first author. When I linked pdfs to EN records the old way, their storage directory was organized and accessible. For the new way EN creates a fairly flat file structure -- it is organized alphabetically by first author, but that is about it. C. It seems to be the case that for old records with hyperlinks to pdfs stored in my library that I get a pdf icon that connects to the pdf in my old directory. However, once I have more "new" versions of links (where the pdfs are duplicated and put into their own EN directory) it will be very hard to know where to go to drag and drop a stored PDF. (All icons have the same label.) I have a large harddrive but it seem pointless haviing multiple copies of the same file especially when 99% of these files are ones I have downloaded from online versions of journals. Recommendation. I will go thru the transition with EN X and will pay my $99 for this minor upgrade. I will not buy multiple copies for my lab and grad students as I have with prior versions as these new features simply are not worth the price of a new release. So I recommend EndNote 9 very highly. I recommned EndNote X if you have never used EN. But I do not recommend switching from EN 9 to EN X unless you have $99 burning a hole in your pocket.

The speed gain is amazing when EndNote is freed from Rosetta. Again, I would really like a more user-friendly upgrade policy. $90 for a software DL, and this on an almost yearly basis is way too much!

EN no longer works, when I click on a reference I get "Service Error: Generic". I guess this will end my odyssey with EN, will switch to Sente or something similar...
