Editors’ Review
Elasto Mania, or "Elma," as it is affectionately called by fans, is a deceptively simple yet challenging 2D motorbike game that took the gaming world by storm upon its release. The controls are simple to learn, yet difficult to master. Four arrow keys accelerate, brake, lean forward, and lean backward, while the spacebar switches the biker's direction in a 2D universe.
The simulation aspects of the game become clearer once you actually try to ride the bike. Because the back wheel is attached by an elastic band, the physical effects on the motorcycle are dramatic. Accelerate too fast and you'll flip backward. Brake too quickly and you'll fall forward.
This elastic twist makes it quite challenging to collect apples, avoid obstacles, and reach the white flower as quickly as possible. However, after a few minutes on the warm up level, most players will become skilled enough to start enjoying the game. Then, at 2 a.m., as you attempt to clear the Loop-de-Loop for the 56th time, you’ll fully understand the addictive nature of Elasto Mania's gameplay.
Elasto Mania includes a series of progressively challenging levels, each designed to test the player's skills in creative ways. Levels are designed with unique obstacles and environments, keeping the gameplay fresh as players advance. From steep hills and sharp turns to loops and narrow paths, the game never feels repetitive.
Elasto Mania’s vibrant community is one of its strongest assets. Despite its age, the game has a dedicated following of players who share tips, tricks, and records online. Speedrunning has become a massive part of Elasto Mania culture, with players attempting to complete levels in the shortest time possible. Websites and forums dedicated to Elasto Mania are filled with player-generated content, including custom levels, fan art, and guides.
The game's popularity has led to unofficial competitions and tournaments where players race against each other’s best times. This competitive scene, though small, is fierce and tightly knit. Elasto Mania's fans have taken the game to heart, forming friendships, developing tools to record and share gameplay, and building a thriving community around a seemingly simple motorbike game.
The release of the 2022 remastered version of Elasto Mania brought this classic to modern consoles like Windows, Xbox, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch. The remaster doesn’t alter the core gameplay or physics; instead, it enhances the graphics and adds quality-of-life improvements that make it more accessible to new players. Updated visuals and smoother animations give the game a fresh look without losing the original's charm.
Despite its enduring charm, Elasto Mania is not without its limitations. The game’s learning curve is steep, and some players may find the controls frustrating. The exaggerated physics, while fun for experienced players, can be a turn-off for newcomers who may struggle with the sensitive handling of the bike.
