This handy application offers a quicker alternative to the Windows Search function, but lacks support for searching files over the network. Dvygun Smart Search's simple interface needs little explanation. On first use, the utility prompts you to create an index of all the files on your hard drive. It took only a couple minutes to index an average 20GB hard drive in our tests.

The program's menu bar contains nine icons to search for all files. You can easily narrow a search to selected categories such as documents, e-mails, audio files, videos, images, or even your contacts. A single field is provided to search terms within document files. Each category has additional options available to help narrow searches. Dvygun Smart Search is accurate and fast. Impressively, this utility can preview some file types or open Windows Explorer to display the folder containing your found file. Regular updating of your index is accomplished with a simple scheduler or during user-set idle times. However, due to the nature of the index, this utility can't search networked drives. Any user would find this effective freeware is a nice replacement for the Windows Search tool.
