Editors’ Review
DREDGE places you aboard a worn trawler in a fog-covered archipelago filled with over 125 fish, eerie relics, and mysterious locals. By day, you fish, dredge shipwrecks, and upgrade gear. But at night, the atmosphere shifts, unnatural shadows emerge, creating tension and danger as you navigate dark waters under the faint glow of your flickering lantern.
DREDGE on mobile delivers the full PC experience with touch-drag inventory, haptic feedback, adjustable graphics, and cloud saves. It transforms the atmospheric fishing adventure into a portable, flexible journey suited for both short bursts and extended play sessions.
Fishing, upgrades, and exploration
Gameplay in DREDGE revolves around fishing, rotating your catch to fit into a limited cargo grid, and returning to port before spoilage occurs. Earnings are used to upgrade engines, rods, nets, and dredging equipment that grant access to new areas like volcanic zones, mangroves, and frozen depths. Atmospheric music and subtle storytelling enhance the sense of mystery, rewarding exploration across five unique and interconnected biomes.
The mobile version is carefully optimized for handheld play. Features like drag-and-drop inventory, pinch-to-zoom, and customizable performance settings ensure smooth gameplay, even on mid-range phones. Cloud saves and achievements sync easily across devices, maintaining progress between phone and tablet. The scaled UI supports short sessions while preserving the game’s tension, atmosphere, and strategic depth.
On smaller phones, the interface reveals limitations; cargo tiles and text can appear too small, making inventory management feel tedious. Performance may drop during intense weather conditions on older devices, and virtual steering lacks the precision of physical controls. Additionally, while the gameplay loop is consistent, players who prefer faster-paced action may find the rhythm repetitive over time, especially during extended sessions or backtracking segments.
Pros
- Atmospheric art and sound
- Seamless cloud progress
Cons
- Small text on phones
- Minor frame-rate drops
Bottom Line
A dark catch worth keeping
The mobile version of DREDGE successfully preserves its captivating blend of fishing and horror through intuitive touch controls and reliable cloud saves. While minor drawbacks like small UI elements and occasional stutters exist, the game’s eerie atmosphere, satisfying upgrade loop, and subtle moments of dread remain intact. It’s a well-adapted experience that brings the haunting charm of the original to portable screens with care.
