Editors' Review
It happens periodically that our computer shuts down, restarts, or hibernates when we really don't want it to. It's true that we could adjust the settings for these actions, but we don't always think to do that. Don't Sleep is a simple utility that blocks computers from performing these and other actions. It really doesn't do anything that you can't do on your own in Windows, but it is handy to have all of these controls in one easy-to-access interface.
This app makes sure your computer does not turn off or restart unexpectedly. It's helpful for anyone who needs their PC to remain active, particularly when using older software that requires continuous operation. "Don't Sleep" also stops your computer from entering sleep or hibernate modes, keeping everything running smoothly.
A useful feature of "Don't Sleep" is its timer functionality. This allows you to set specific times for your computer to stay active or to shut down, which is beneficial during lengthy downloads or software updates. You can run "Don't Sleep" from a USB stick or other portable devices, making it convenient to use on different computers without installation.
The app also prevents screen savers from starting and keeps you logged in by stopping automatic log-offs. This means your workspace remains uninterrupted, letting you focus on your tasks. Don't Sleep is an essential tool for keeping your computer's uptime. It is especially useful when you have critical work that cannot be interrupted. The app interfaces well with various versions of Windows and is user-friendly. However, it is important to note that extensive use of this utility might lead to quicker battery drainage.
The program's design is utilitarian, just a small gray rectangle with a few check boxes and drop-down menus. Users can choose to block shutdown, hibernation, log-off, and screensaver activation. An optional timer lets users choose when they want to exit Don't Sleep, and the program can simply stop running or stop running and shut down or hibernate the computer. Users can also select a time for the program to start running, anywhere from 5 minutes to 48 hours in the future. A menu gives users access to several Windows utilities, including the Task Manager, System Properties, Power Option Properties, and Display Properties. There's no Help file, and although Don't Sleep isn't really difficult to figure out, it does assume some level of familiarity with its subject manner. Overall, Don't Sleep didn't wow us--much of what it does can be done within Windows without a separate application--but the program works just fine. Users who often need to block or schedule computer shutdowns should find that it meets their needs.
Bottom Line
Don't Sleep comes as a ZIP file. It's accessible after extraction with no need for installation. We recommend this program to all users.
