DiskTracker is the complete disk cataloging and labeling system for the Apple Macintosh. It features an extremely intuitive user interface and a bunch of useful features. DiskTracker allows to view the contents of scanned disks in a familiar, easy-to-use MacOS-style list, and scan the contents of StuffIt (all versions, including StuffIt 5) and Compact Pro archives. Drag & Drop copy and move between the Finder and DiskTracker Fast, multi-parameter searches on 22 different criteria. Complete disk labeling system for convenient and professional disk label creation and printing. Draw label templates with the built-in MacDraw-style editor, featuring powerful file-lists and rotatable styled text.
1.) Catalogs selected disks whether connected directly or on a network.
2.) Once a disk is cataloged, it can be searched quite rapidly--and the search can include a number of disks at once.
3.) Search results are much easier to obtain than in Finder.
Cons
Could be free, shareware, or $10 cheaper; probably could catalog faster than it does.
Summary
I do not pretend to have used this application for very long, and I am certain I have not considered all its features--I may never learn them all. Essentially for me it is a Snow Leopard replacement for CD Finder app, and it does handily all I want it to do. I have had it catalog only four hard drives so far, but they are fairly large ones full of data, so it may be unfair of me to make note of the seemingly long time it takes to catalog. Certainly it seems to take no time at all to find data, and it is much more intelligent and intuitive than Apple's Finder app IMHO, returning finds from all disks in a single single window, with all paths clearly indicated. Very good user interface. I like it.
fast useful flexible, is functional not mac juicy

Pros
Handles big drives, fast, useful and flexible. Duplicate finder is also fast and customisable took 3 minutes to sort 3x10E6 files.
Well worth the $$
Cons
user interface appearance is basic, looks dated.
controls sparse for some things eg cancel dup find is missing
Summary
I like it. It works.
Easy to use

Pros
If you have a bunch of Cds or DVDs this program will catalog them as fast as you can insert into reader. Has a fast search function and can tell which Cd the item is on if you serial number the discs
Cons
some times it seems to overload and quits. Save often

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />I have used DiskTracker for years now. It is simple, easy to use and, until recently, was pretty much bullet proof. Snow Leopard threw in some unexpected kinks, but the developer was very responsive to inquiry, got right on it, and we're now back in business. I don't agree with the previous reviewer that the interface needs to become more glitzy. When something works so well for the purpose intended and doesn't require an extensive manual to figure it out, why mess with it? Highly recommended.

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />Flaky for me under Os 10.5.2 on an Intel iMac... Some disk records disappear from list view and only show up if I reinsert the disk and update the record. Stated volume and directory sizes are also unreliable, eg a 5GB folder shows up as 1GB. Meanwhile, I have none of these problems in version 2.3 on a G4 PowerBook running Os 10.4.11. This is hardly progress.
Very fast and easy even with huge amount of data

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />I own a recording studio using Pro Tools HD for music recording and production. I have about 5 years worth of session file backup discs of clients music taking up over 550 (4.2GB) DVD-R discs. I had a fear of the program getting sluggish with more and more being added each month, but it hasn't. Even on my old 1GHz powerbook the file opens up quick and searches are surprisingly fast.
I would highly recommend this app to anyone who needs to catalog the contents of any media for offline searching. This was the best $30 I ever spent.

Can't scan network volumes under Tiger

Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />Version 2.3.2 does NOT fix the problem of getting error -36, Can't scan volume under Tiger (10.4.2). I don't know if this is something with Apple's implementation, or how DiskTracker scans previously-scannable volumes, but there's now some kind of conflict with certain of my Windows server volumes. I have to get a user who is using Mac OS X 10.3.9 to catalog the problem volumes.
That plus the fact it can't search or display Unicode filenames makes it tough to continue to use the app. I used it predominantly to index the network share volumes, and if it can't do that then it's not much use in the world of Spotlight and/or Quicksilver.
Only two stars for Quality/Stability for now.
Not pretty, but blazing fast

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />Sure, DiskTracker isn't the prettiest OS X application around but I find it intuitive enough. Most important of all is the speed. In my tests it came out more than 10 times faster than the next closest contender in doing a search for a file on my catalog of over 500 DVDs and CDs containing tens of thousands of files. That's worth something in my books, and well worth the licensing fee.
Not OS X savy and no unicode support!

Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />This app is *so* classic like in many of its attributes and it does not support unicode at all - no use even if you've got one file name that has unicode characters inside it - won't search, won't even display its name properly.
