If you're willing to invest some time with the manual, Directory Snoop is an effective tool for both rescuing and obliterating data. Its interface looks tricky at first, but the utility turns out to be quite easy to use. Then again, a wizard dialog would be nice for users who'd rather not sweat through the help files. Directory Snoop finds files, allows for filtering and content searching, and even reveals raw hard-disk data cluster by cluster. The shredder function permanently deletes files and clears the disk space using several algorithms, including DoD 3/7-pass and Gutmann 35-pass. You can even eliminate the records associated with deleted files in the Master File table. In our tests, we managed to restore files both from an internal hard disk and a Flash drive. Directory Snoop won't work its magic on damaged disks or partitions, nor can you run it from a bootable diskette if your system has crashed. CD-ROMs are not supported, either. PC novices may be intimidated, but anyone willing to do a bit of reading can leverage the power of this data detective.

It is a solid program.
Cons
However, it comes to my attention that this program has given me some problems. After freeing my hard-drive and clusters, my computer began to give me BSODs. Since I hadn't either installed software (or hard drive) or changed registry, I believe this cleaning process from Directory Snoop did it.

I accidentally deleted my music file. I downloaded this tool to see if it would work. I'm surprised at how quickly and efficiently it did. I was able to recover all my files quickly and easily. The interface is easy to learn and recovering files is very easy. This programs trial is not one of those stupid 64kb max recover so you get to test the program to its fullest.

After having gone thru a cupple of pages in 'Download' I installed six program for test. This was the best. <p>The intuition, for the user, is not 100% but comparing to others it has good class.

I have used this product for many years. It has never failed, crashed, or caused problems for any other software I use. I used it on Windows 95, 98, 98se, ME, and 2000. All have been in the FAT format. Now the 5.0 version of DS works with NTFS as well. If file wiping security is needed, this one will do it all and do it well.
Could not read my corrupted Thumdrive.

The program probably works fine for what it does.... undeleting files. But any claims about reading damaged drives would be overstated. Another program, Active Undelete 5.1.005, worked like a charm.
