The DIR command displays a list of files and subfiles in a selected directory, and it's been a useful if somewhat old-fashioned feature of Windows since before it was Windows, back in the MS-DOS days. KRKsoft's Directory Lister Pro generates lists from any directory and saves them as HTML, CSV, or text files. It's a shareware utility that wraps the old-school functionality of the DIR command in a modern Windows interface with many options.

Directory Lister Pro's interface is plain but efficient and clearly configured, with three resizable panels: A left-hand navigation panel with a tree view of all our system's drives and network shares and a horizontally divided main pane with a tabbed control and configuration suite on top and a directory display below. We clicked one of our hard drives, and Directory Lister Pro quickly scanned it and displayed its contents in a color-coded table. The tabs are populated with checkboxes for selecting items like column headings, order, and attributes; program options; filters; display settings; and behavior. You can save and load your configurations as well as HTML forms for saving and printing reports, and a Send Listing icon let us send saved reports via e-mail. The Output options included extras like the ability to generate HTML links to files or directories, while the Other Columns tab let us add wide range of extra columns, such as comments, languages, copyright, and product version; there's even an option to add columns for the four most common hashes. The Microsoft Windows Network column identified all the shared directories and subdirectories in our workgroup, too.

Among this tool's extras is a Language menu for quickly selecting from a wide range of interface languages. However, Directory Lister Pro's focus is providing a staggering range of options and tools for bringing unprecedented power and flexibility to a very simple task, generating list views of directories. You've come a long way, DIR!
