Despite a rather limited scope, this application makes splitting audio files an intuitive process. True to its word, Direct WAV MP3 Splitter can dice WAVs or MP3s into any number of segments, though it only can save the files in the latter format. The program's main window is intuitive enough to use, though it's no beauty. To ensure you chop your tracks at the correct moments, the utility lets you play the song before selecting start and end points via a couple of quick mouse clicks. The program can easily cut off any number of fragments you need. It also can chop files into a certain number of equal parts or cut tracks by time and size. Folks who need to digitize their LPs and cassettes will appreciate the feature that automatically detects pauses between tracks. Direct WAV MP3 Splitter now comes with a 30-day demo, making it that much more attractive to anyone who routinely needs to split audio files.
What’s new in version 2.7.0.25
Version 2.7.0.25 features: minimum Sound Duration added to Pause Detection; ability to work with files up to 999 hours; correct read/write CUE files Artist/Album tags.
freezes every time you try to split a second mp3 (win7). to do this, you have to restart the program, but of course you've lost all your settings, so everything needs to be reconfigured. I contacted the programmer several times via e-mail, but he/she chose not to reply. There's no way in hell I'd give them a cent, so I've uninstalled the program. I think I'll spend money on software whose programmer offers support, and cares about improving his software!

Don't waste your time- download a different program
Split MP3 files into smaller ones in under 10 seconds
spenkopp
Pros
Speedy 1.5GB audio book file splint in 10 seconds. As a novice with type software, could easily set up file splits, Haven't tried custom splits yet. (Once you buy their Splitter, they send you a discount ooupon for the Joiner program) No buzz, click or hum.
Cons
None known.
Summary
Program does what it's supposed to do efficiently, intuitively, without drama, in excellent time
Hated it. I need graphical options, not twiddly hybrids
hilarleo
Pros
Did complicated MP3 stuff I couldnt do for myself, "for free".
Worked out of the box without tutorials.
Speed impressive.
Optimized for automated splitting.
Plus more menus+stuff for fiddly MP3-type bother I'll [hopefully] never ever look at.
Cons
Antique part-graphic/part-numeric interface for creating user-identified split locations ... it's a stone-slow-drag. Pass.
Summary
Maybe I should stay with Macs for A/V.
But sometimes I need something similar for Windows.
So my expectations could be unreasonable for Windows circa 2012.
This program seems to be 10-year-old legacy swag.
Functional enuf on the inside - but outside, a cipher.
Unless you're content to do automated splitting full-time,
the interface is sub-par.
This software works very nicely

Pros
Easy to use, smooth execution, and stable, great software.
Cons
Resulting file worked great but indicated a longer playing time than it actually was.

Pros
It's simple and easy to use.
Very nice little programme.
Cons
None. Absoltely nothing wrong with this.
Summary
There's nothing I can say bad about this. I leave my radio recording for about an hour or so. Then take the hour long recording and bring it into this.. trim off the bad and I keep what I like.
Excellent little programme.
Works great for big audiobooks
tsilba
Pros
broke the mp3s into manageable size segments
Cons
too many steps to get the job done
Summary
Works great. I use it often.
Nice program, but dead in the water since version 2.6
Alan Mintaka
Pros
Still does a fair job of splitting large MP3 files. More or less functional utility program.
Cons
Occasionally Pause by Detection doesn't split in right location - file split in middle of sound, actual pause was just before or after split. Works for the most part, fails often enough to be annoying. On this basis, paid version is overpriced.
Summary
Pros and cons spell out basic functionality of this program. Another con is that **according to the upgrade notes** this program has been dead in the water since version 2.6. The upgrade notes for 2.6, 2.7.0.24 and 2.7.0.25 have been exactly the same: "Version N features: minimum Sound Duration added to Pause Detection; ability to work with files up to 999 hours; correct read/write CUE files Artist/Album tags." In fact, Minimum Silence (not Minimum Sound Duration, which was already there) has been added since 2.6. This carelessness on the part of the developers, plus the occasional failure of Split by Pause Detection, makes shopping around for similar programs a good idea.<br /><br /><span class='notifyMsg'> Updated </span>on Apr 25, 2011<p/>UPDATE 04/25/2011
Since submitting the original review, I've determined that version 2.7.0.25 produces corrupt MP3 headers at many split locations. If I could reduce the rating to 0 stars at this point, I would.
Super easy to use, wish it wasn't just a trial!

Pros
Simple install, intuitive to use, concise simple Help Tutorial. Plenty of shortcuts. Allows u to listen to file right in the app at where ever you tell it to start at normal, fast, or slow speed. Includes automatic track detector.
Cons
Very minor but to enter start/end times, you have to type-over all hhh:mm:ss:sss values; backspace takes u to beginning of field. U can't multi-select all files in splitlist and give them all the same album name without overwriting all track titles.
Summary
This is the 2nd mp3 splitter I've downloaded, and I like it much more than the 1st. I had downloaded a live CD but it wasn't split into tracks so I used this app to split the MP3 into 12 files. It installed correctly in the x86 Programs folder with the option to install elsewhere. You can split MP3 or WAVs based on specific start/end times, evenly into parts, or it can automatically detect splits. It has an option to join files but I didn't try it out yet. I tried the automatic detector on my live MP3 and it only detected 5 tracks instead of 12 probably because of the clapping between songs.
I like the customizable options like file naming conventions. You can use the mouse to pick the start/end in a graph or type the times into fields. I opened to Help to get an idea of I was supposed to do, quickly found info on splitting, read the 4 short steps and was off and running. There are plenty of shortcuts, (CTRL+ E=edit track info; Ins=Add to SplitList) and anytime i wasn't sure what a field/button/tab was for I found simple, clear expl. in the Help.
The "cons" I listed are trivial because I really haven't found any major problems. There are easy to figure out workarounds to my "cons". I did find it kind of annoying that once I'd already identified all the tracks, I couldn't multi-select them and update their album name on all of them in the properties. I had to edit each track's one at a time before splitting the MP3. The only other option is to "Set ID3 TAG on all sections" which updates all tracks with the same title, album, artist, etc.
Overall it's a great program but I don't think I'm going to pay the $20 to buy it because I don't have a great enough need for the service.
Program does exactly what's needed

Pros
Program does exactly what is needed. Feature packed. Very precise controls.
Cons
There is s a very slight learning curve.
Summary

bjosephs
Pros
Clean and easy to use.
Cons
I use this mainly for lectures. When automatically splitting a file into parts, it would be nice if it would automatically split at the nearest pause (between the words) without having to use the pause detection for the whole file.
Summary
Certainly worth $15 registration if you need such a program
