Desk UnPDF Converter for Mac is designed to solve the longstanding problem of editing PDF files in a native word processor. By stripping out PDF formatting and converting the text into RTF for Windows 97+ or Open Office, this app allows you to then open and edit those files more easily. While there are certainly some limitations in terms of the formatting, layout, and style of the finished document, it works well.

When you open UnPDF, you can start converting documents right away. Just load any PDF into the software and then select how you want it exported. You can choose from one of five options for export, as well as the number of pages, margins, and how the text and graphics will be displayed in the document. Keep in mind that the formatting of the PDF will greatly effect how it looks when converted. Additionally, because it exports in RTF, not all word processors can open the files; Pages for Mac, for example, can't handle RTF. The interface, however, is very well made, with everything you need onscreen and the conversion process was fast, every time we tested it.

Desk UnPDF Converter for Mac is a useful piece of software that will allow you to streamline conversion of nearly any PDF you have. The software comes with a trial version that will convert only three pages from any one document at a time, but the paid version is affordable and useful for those who find themselves in need of PDF editing tools, regularly.

Trial version, tried for a half hour to convert to Word a clean pdf of a quite clean typewriter page typed in old Courier font every character of which was easily readable by eye on the pdf. It wrongly identified some 95% of the characters, result was completely unusable. I give it two stars because, for it to have done so poorly, I must have done something wrong, but hard to imagine how it could be so extremely wrong. I used OCR's including Omnipage a lot back in the 1990's, always had good results. Hope you have better luck- the trial is free. I also tried the same document using online product: http://online.pdftodocconverterpro.com/ but Word Mac 2011 couldn't read it, did it twice. Guess I'll have to just type it in. Mac Mini Core 2 Duo 2GHz OS10.6.8 2G 120G

Translations were frequently garbled. Didn't start up properly, heated up the computer, and kept the fan on. Very unusual behavior.
Summary
It appears to be dodgy software, and the owners/sellers do not seem to be interested in improving it. Try a different pdf to doc translator!

Gets docs out of pdf into word format, for easier manipulation of text, etc.
Cons
Made redundant by pdf readers that give you great freedom on selecting and editing text. (Like Skim or, paid, PdfPen.) Too often produces highly unstable word documents in which whole sections vanish when you mouse over them.
Summary
I've pretty much relegated this to the "wasted my money" category. I submitted examples of unpdf's terrible, unusable translations of pdf files, and the help desk told me they were fine. a nice idea in theory. but I think the new breed of pdf readers/creators make this one irrelevant.

I only wanted PDF to html. 1) the trial mode is insufficient for running some tests - it should allow you to run complete documents for a limited number of times - not just a few pages. I need to see much more. 2) I had a pdf which contained all my fonts. I wanted to test converting it to html (maybe I had some settings wrong) but I got nothing in three tries - and I couldn't find a solution, or if it might work (because of the limit to testing). 3) I had a pdf that was password protected. I put in the correct password (it was cool that deskUNPDF offered to accept the password.) BUT it did not work, even with several careful reattempts. A couple of simple single pages of a large document came out very nice, but I can't justify the high price and will not likely buy a working version for further testing. (maybe at half that price)

I'm a journalist, and I bought it to make extracting information from pdf journal articles--social science, law, etc.--simpler. (It's frustrating, for example, to cut-and-paste from a pdf when it's in two columns.) Skim is a great program but I'd hoped working directly with Word files would be better. Unfortunately, whether because of design flaws or the inherent difficulty of the task, I find that glitches end up making the UNPDF'd versions just as annoying to deal with as an unSkimmed PDF. Things will be going well; then on one page, suddenly the converted-to-Word text in one column will simply disappear. Then I have to go back to the pdf file, and I end up saving little time. The translated files, in short, seem unstable in some way. I'm chalking up the $60 spent as a failed experiment; perhaps future updates will fix the current glitches.
