Not bad for chimes, many better clocks out there
kjhosein- Pros
- For chimes: * lots of options for chime sounds * has a quarterly chime option The app: * nothing to install. Just run the exe. Great! More tiny apps like this should have this option.
- Cons
- For chimes: * Can't set volume level under WinXP (prob can under Win 7, etc. on a per application basis). Much too loud otherwise. * Can't set it to be only hourly and half-hourly. It's either hourly or hourly and quarterly. The clock: * meh. There are many better options out there.
- Summary
- This app should really focus on the chimes aspect and provide more options.
Not worth the download
LadyRoku- Pros
- Does chime when you remember to open it, You can pick your own sounds
- Cons
- Doesn't save user preferences, Doesn't load on startup, No volume control
- Summary
- I'm upset that this doesn't load when I start my computer. The point of downloading this was so that I would remember to keep track of time, so of course I'm not going to remember to open it every time I log on. As another user stated, it does not save your preferences and you have to change it every time you open it. Although, somehow it remembered my sound files, and not my chime preferences. Speaking of my chime preferences, I set it to chime on the half hour, but it completely ignored this and chimed every quarter hour anyway. I found it quite annoying that there was no volume control, since the chimes were loud compared to the other sounds of my computer. Another thing I found annoying was that clicking the x shut down the program and clicking the minimize button closed the window. Typically, when a program works in the background and appears in the system tray, clicking on the x will only close the window and clicking minimize will actually minimize it. Because I'm so used to this, I kept shutting down the program by accident and had to reopen it and readjust my settings. It looks like there is a newer version of this program on CNET, so I don't know why they bother keeping this piece of crap up for download.
A Big Ben chime that works with XP :)
MsESC- Pros
- I tend to lose track of time while on the computer, and desperately needed something like this. I'd found some other software that specifically refers to chiming like Big Ben, but was disappointed to find it wasn't designed for Windows XP. So I thought I'd try Chimer, and was pleasantly surprised--I'm sure this IS Big Ben, although not labeled as such. It works and it's free--what more could I want?
- Cons
- A bell icon appears in the system tray, but unlike many other programs it doesn't respond to a right-click or a single left click. Double-left-clicking is the only way to bring it up. Ringing on the hour is different than I expected. If you have it set to Hours, it will ring 2 times at 2 o'clock, 3 times 3 o'clock, etc. But it simply repeats the same wav file that many times, and the wav file contains lots of empty air after the chime. So it's really painful just waiting for each successive chime, particularly at noon! I've reset it to just chime once at the top of the hour.
- Summary
Doesn't chime
theunknownsith- Pros
- Cons
- After using my own sounds for the chimes, the chimer doesn't chime on the hour nor every 15 mins. Not only does it not have many options such as a system start up option, it also doesn't have save option so you can save your own sound template. The program forces you to use a default template when you restart the program. Very annoying when you have to redo everything over and over again.
