Celtx is a cloud-based media pre-production platform that organizes script development, visual planning, and production logistics in a single workspace. Its core environment combines a Script Editor with structured formatting rules for multiple script types, alongside project modules that store production data. 

Celtx links written content with planning elements such as Storyboarding, Breakdowns, and Scheduling tools, allowing script elements to populate other sections of a project. A shared project system maintains assets, metadata, and revisions in a centralized database, while built-in collaboration features allow multiple contributors to access and modify project components simultaneously through synchronized cloud sessions.

Scripted success

Celtx's writing environment applies industry-standard formatting rules in the Script Editor, adjusting elements such as dialogue, action lines, and transitions based on the selected script type. It supports screenplays, stage plays, and multi-column layouts, with structural templates that define formatting behavior. Tagged elements within the script connect directly to other modules, allowing objects such as characters or props to be referenced outside the writing interface. However, it depends on script tagging for data flow.

Visual planning takes place through Storyboarding, where uploaded images or constructed frames are arranged into scene sequences. The Shot Blocker module provides a layout interface that maps actor positions and camera angles within a virtual frame. Scene data links back to script segments, allowing each storyboard panel to correspond with specific script sections. These visual elements are stored within the project structure, enabling cross-referencing between written and visual components without requiring external files.

Production planning tools extract structured data through Script Breakdown, which scans tagged script elements and categorizes them into production components. This data feeds into Budgeting tools that organize cost entries tied to these elements. The Scheduling system converts breakdown data into stripboards and calendars, generating timelines and Call Sheets that compile daily production details. Each module references shared project data, so updates in one section propagate across related planning documents.
