BurnX Free makes it very easy to burn CD's with multiple sessions in an hybrid format for compatibility with other platforms.

Available only for Mac OS X, this application lets you burn a CD or DVD by dragging and dropping files or folders to the main window, you can use sessions so multiple burns can be done in the same disc (CD only). It also has the ability to erase a CD or DVD.

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />The hybrid burning of CDs and DVDs is great! The only problem is that every disc burned gets the volume name "My Disc". I typed a new name (and hit enter), but that doesn't change the volume name on the burned disc.

Stable, reliable burns -- and the contents are EXACTLY laid out as the original. I have yet to do any CD-Rs. I can imagine the experience will be the same. Herman, may I suggest for version 1.6 you consider an 'append' function for burning DVD-Rs? It would be helpful for 'session' burning. It has been mentioned here that there is no way to know how much you are adding to the content zone. A classic easy workaround is to fill a folder to near-max and just burn the folder at one go. I found the result to be extremely accurate. Excellent software, Herman! Beats everything else I've used/tried hands-down! (For the record, I'm using this on a G4 12" PowerBook / 1.5ghz / OS 10.4.0 / 512mb)

And, the great thing is that it copies your icons. So, you get fantastic graphics not generic file folders, so it's really easy to recognize them since they are identical to the icons on your harddrive. Never saw this before and it's great. One suggestion that's pretty important: As you add files to the burn window, the program does NOT tell you how large they are so far, so you don't know if you have room for more files. I looked and could not find out to turn on this feature. So you have to add up your file sizes on paper. I presume, if you add too much, you will get an error, but that is not the best way. However, I find that I am unable to burn either DVD-R or DVD+RW disks in multiple sessions, even when that option is selected. The CD-R and CDRW's work fine. It would be nice if it would work with DVDs as well. But, thanks. It's a great app overall.

People ARE strange ... ;) BurnX Free is excellent! Small, simple, and beautiful OS X user interface, no clutter and no hidden files copied around your hard drive. Just speed and ease of use. I particularly liked the fact BurnX doesn't need to create temporary files and caches, but directly burns to CD. I wish the developer all the best and thank him for this nice utility.

Yes it is limited in what it does , but you can't give it poor marks for that. What it does it does very well, and if you want to share files with a PC you can't do it using the finder so use this free application. Brilliant. Lets hope that more featurers will be added.

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />Toast Lite 5.2 was getting long in the tooth, so I set out to find a more up-to-date replacement, and this fits the bill almost perfectly. I do agree it needs to show free space (not that Toast did either) but most of the other issues mentioned in the reviews are with Apples DiscBurning.framework, not specific to this app. Not perfect, but for $0, it's damn close.
