• Intuitive, simple design makes budgeting easy

  I've been using Budget Calendar for several years, and I've loved it. Before finding Budget Calendar I used YNAB, Mint, and just a simple excel spreadsheet, all with limited success. Budget Calendar is simple, easy to figure out, and gives you a "real world" view of how you're spending your money. (You don't spend your money in one long column like most budgets are set up. You spend you money over a 30 day period.) The program has the perfect amount of functionality (scheduling payments, forecasting, etc) without going overboard and becoming complicated. I recommend downloading the trial and giving it a try.

  Cons

  I don't really have any cons. I had one issue with the "summary" view rounding numbers when I didn't want it to. For instance, "Eating out" would round $249.72 to $250. I'm a nerd so I like to see the exact amount I'm spending in each category at the end of the month, not a rounded number. I emailed the developer and within 24 hours he had updated the software on their site with the option to show exact amounts under the software preferences. Great customer service.

  I've been using the program for 3 years and love it. Worth the price for sure.

  When I was looking for budgeting software I wanted something that would allow me to see my finances in a realistic, "real world" setting. The problem with most budgeting software (i.e. Quicken) is that you can only see a combined total of what your income and expenses are for that month. This setup only allows me to see what I make each month and what my total expenses are. Unfortunately, it doesn't give me a realistic picture of WHEN my money comes in and out and if I have enough money at any given time to cover expenses. <p>Budget Calendar is a simple budgeting software that allows you to set up and see your finances in a more realistic, "real world" manner. In other words, let's say you make $4,000 a month but are only paid on the 15th and 30th. This is going to affect how your income is budgeted in order to cover your bills appropriately.<p>With Budget Calendar you simply input your income on the day(s) you receive it and record your expenses on the days you make any purchases or pay bills. Budget Calendar automatically does all of the mathematics for you to give you a realistic picture of your finances throughout the month. You can set up these entries on a re-occurring basis. Budget Calendar also remembers your most common entries and stores them in what is called a "Wild Transaction" allowing you to quickly input expenses without retyping all of the information. Budget Calendar also features an overview of the month giving you your average balance, minimum and maximum balance for each month as well as a forecast chart that projects a forecast of your income and expenses based on your activity. Budget Calendar includes a summary chart that lists a brief list of the expenses and income for the month in graph form.<p>It's simple and easy to use for anyone who doesn't have the time of knowledge to wade through the confusion and difficulty of Quicken.

  Cons

  As with all newly released software there will be the inevitable bugs and quirks. This one is no exception. Of all of the features missing in Budget Calendar the most glaring omission is the lack of keyboard shortcuts for common tasks such as "Save" and "Close". This is a feature that is all too common in today's software to be missing. One quirk that could be confusing to users is how the user must input their Income by selecting "Add new payment". Perhaps the addition of "/income" would help. One of the most annoying "quirks" is how Budget Calendar handles preferences. In a typical software program when you change some of its preferences the software saves the changes and remembers them each time you restart the software. Not Budget Calendar. For example, the default text size for everything is 7 points. Unless you have a 30" screen this is pretty small. To change the type size you have to go to Preferences and change the font size for each category in the program. Once you are done you click "Save" as you normally would. However, Budget Calendar asks you where you would like to save this newly created preferences file! This file must then be manually reloaded each time you restart Budget Calendar. In this day and age of computers this task seems completely unnecessary. If I change the preferences I expect the program to remember these changes for me. Another "feature" I would like to see in the future is the ability for Budget Calendar to remember the budget file I was working on and have it opened and ready to go whenever I start the program up instead of presenting me with a blank, new one. You also cannot take your budget file and drag it to the Budget Calendar application icon to start it up. Budget Calendar will act as if it does not recognize it. <p>Despite its shortcomings, Budget Calendar does its job pretty well without being overly complicated or confusing.
