For donating to a distributed computing science project
bawkbawkboo1- Pros
- Allows you to donate computing power to various scientific projects, like Rosetta@home of SETI@home. It does what it's supposed to do.
- Cons
- The GUI is functional but was obviously ported and feels out of place among programs made specifically for the Mac, especially Apple's own software, of course. Some of the terminology that is thrown around would be confusing to new users.
- Summary
- Somewhat off-topic: Why the heck is this listed as "accounting and billing software"?
Brilliant...BUT

Still not 'nice'

- This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Since some of the feedback (below) seems to be dated, here is an updated review. I've been using BOINC Manager on two PPC computers running several projects each and have had no problems whatsoever. One is running OSX 10.4.8 and the other running the beta version of 10.5. Highly recommended!
Not elegant

There were lots and lots of server problems initially that seem to mostly be worked out. The biggest issue I have with this software is that it just is not an elegant solution the way I expect most Mac software to be....its clunky and ....not as pretty to look at either :-)
Terrible

- Summary
- This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I've been running SETI@home for a number of years now, and this new Boinc version is terrible. I tried the version 4 that came out a little while back, and as v5 says nothing of what improvements were made, I am afraid to even try it. The boinc program in general is very clumsy to try to set up, and it messed up on both my Mac and Windows computers, on Windows locking the computer and on Mac refusing to Quit or even Force Quit. The people designing these tools need to take a _serious_ look at the elegantly useable "SETI Menu" from AstroK Software. It is well designed, well implemented, and just works. I'm still running the old version of SETI@home using that program, and it has never given me any problems whatsoever. Boinc is on the right track by making a menubar-only interface like this that stays out of the way, but they have a loooooong way to go. If, in essence, you're asking other people to do you a favor, make sure the tools they need to use to _do_ that favor is easy to use and does _not_ cause problems. It will be a long while before I bother to check this program out again. Pity.
Seems to run OK on Tiger
