This program operates on a simple premise and should be easy for all users to handle. Even though the program throws around calculus terms like "algorithm," it does a fantastic job of breaking down the key components of its security and making deletion simple for all.

Users are greeted by a menu asking whether they wish to shred files, folders, system files, the Recycle Bin, and even free disc space that may still contain sensitive information. Each option comes with a definition, so inexperienced users can be confident they are shredding the right files. The actual process of shredding is simple: users just browse and click on the files they want erased and the job is done.

While Blancco - File Shredder is fairly simple, it does come with a few customizations. There is a long list of algorithm choices for deleting files, each with a brief explanation about what makes it different. Large company established 1997 with offices all over the world.<p>Easy to contact company by email or telephone.<p>The person I dealt with was very helpful.<p>The program has a nice interface and generally seems to work very well.<p>It has a drop down list of shredding options from 1x to 35x passes.<p>It is helpful being able to shred the free disc space as well as files and folders, recycle bin and system files.
Cons
1. The software on the face of it appears to be an outright purchase of $29.95.<p>Not the case! Only when you have paid for the latest version will it display 366 days to run. It then counts down till it stops running after a year. You then have to register for a new licence (currently another $29.95 for 1 year, $49.95 for 2 years, $69.95 for 3 years). You can purchase additional years directly after the initial purchase but you are not given that saving option before you make that initial purchase.<p>You may possibly in future be able to purchase the product for life and pay for upgrades like any other normal software house. <p>2. Version tested 2006 is not the latest. You finally pay for 7.6.0.0 which may have different characteristics.<p>3. No specific uninstall facility provided. You will have to uninstall via Windows the 2006 version to install the 2007 version.<p>4. Help file missing completely on installation. You have to obtain this from the internet and place it in the correct folder.<p>5. No facility during installation to place program files for either All Users or just a Named User. Automatically places the files in All Users.<p>6. It has the most quirky means of minimising the screen during processing the Free Disc Space clean that I have ever seen. If you minimise the program to look at some other program when you return you will not find a tab in the task bar to maximise again. It can be quite alarming as the program seems to have disappeared completely. I had to click the original shortcut as if to start the program again. It then placed a small red cross in the bottom left corner of the screen. From here the only apparent way to get the screen up was to right click next to the red cross and select open. <p>An absolute pain!<p>6. Directly shredding a desktop icon does not remove the icon from the desktop but merely removes the file that the icon is pointing to. That is OK if that is how you want it to work, but if I want to delete a desktop icon I want it removed from the desktop completely.
