BackupAssist provides a rich set of features for scheduling, managing, and monitoring backups. The application is overkill for the lone freelancer, but small and midsize businesses will appreciate the wide range of options and ability to create multiple jobs.

A wizard interface walks you through setting up a new job, starting with the type of backup (system, file, or application). BackupAssist does a good job of presenting its many options through visual cues and integrated Help text. We appreciated the built-in list of scheduling options, which came with recommendations on the type of company most likely to use each one and pictures of file trees showing how the backups would be stored. Monitoring backups is simple as well. For each run, the application creates a report describing what directories were backed up, stats such as disk space used and time spent, and any errors that occurred. An event log, similar to the Windows event viewer, provides even more granular information. BackupAssist can send these reports and notifications to you via e-mail.

Although the application greatly simplifies managing backups, the ideal customer will still be a power user with some system administration experience. A free 30-day trial provides a good amount of time to take BackupAssist for a test drive, but be aware that the listed price does not cover all of the snap-ins you'll see in the trial product--in fact, we were disappointed to find that Exchange Server, SQL Server, and Rsync were not included. Still, we recommend it as a viable backup program.

Pros
Backup assist appears to be the perfect backup program, easy to use and offers functionality such as tape backup on Windows Server 2008.
Cons
The is huge bug in the tape restore module (Zip to Tape) that prevents you restoring large data file, like you database or exchange store. Tech support is very poor, we have waited over 1 year for a fix to this bug (which the application developers have acknowledged) but no fix is forcoming despite having paid software assurance also!
Summary
Do not take the chance on your backup, if such a fundamental bug exists in this part of the software what other ones exist that are waiting to prevent you restoring your data when you need it?

Pros
This software offers SMB the backups they need at a price that will not break the bank. Easy restore process. Rsync allows you to have secure offsite backups. The Exchange backup makes resorting a mailbox simple.

No folder omission when doing Windows 2008 backups

Good for small business

File replication is good for small business, RSYNC capability is a huge benefit. allows for relatively cheap secure off-site backups with the ability for many restore points. Support team is good to work with even if they don't resolve the issue.
Cons
File replication is not good for a large # of files. When trying to back up a file set of aroung 1.5 million files the linking technology causes it to take a long time to delete a "backup set" to free up space. it takes 6 hours to delete a backup set
Summary
Great product for small business without a large # of files. Medium-large businesses likely need a more robust product. Giving 4 out of 5 as if you're looking for a solid backup solution for a small business this is a great product.
This product is not ready for release--needs more work.

It has a nice looking GUI.
Cons
The first time I used this product, I realized I got screwed. The program is totally unresponse to user inputs. As for the DVD media backup, it just doesn't work. Save your time and money this product is bogus.
Summary
I took a chance that this product would do alot more than the NTbackup included with Windows 2003 SBS. It has no advantages--none. I expected much more than I've seen so far. I would not recommend this product.

BackupAssist does exactly what it claims to do. It does it very well and very reliably. With some ingenuity and lateral thinking Â– besides backup - significant portion of automated PC file maintenance can be achieved. Support from the company is also excellent. Overall; outstanding product at very reasonable price.
