B1 Free Archiver lets you create and view archives through a straightforward process. Supporting multiple archive formats, this free utility integrates with Windows Explorer and features advanced options like protecting archives with a password and splitting them into smaller parts.

Pros

Very accessible settings: The developers of B1 Free Archiver have taken the time to make sure that the most popular options in the app's settings are properly explained, even to the point where you'll see screenshots displaying the end results of some features. There is also an extensive list of display languages available.

Password protection and archive splitting: When creating an archive, you have the option to add a password to it as well as split it into smaller pieces for easier transfers. Unfortunately, some of those options are only available if you opt to use the proprietary .B1 archive format.

Windows Explorer integration: You needn't open the app in order to take advantage of its functionality -- you can create and extract archives by right-clicking on files in Windows Explorer. When we tested these features, we were able to create an archive of a 3.42GB HD video that was password protected and split into 700MB pieces in approximately 25 minutes.

Cons

Limited number of formats during archive creation: When you try to create an archive, you'll be given the option to choose only between a ZIP file and a B1 archive. To make matters worse, not all archive features are allowed if you opt to use a ZIP format.

Bottom Line

B1 Free Archiver turns out to be a great piece of software if you're looking for a straightforward way of creating and extracting archives. If you're looking for something advanced and powerful, however, you will find this free app quite restrictive, especially for creating archives.

Pros
Fast file compression and extraction. Supports many formats. Easier to use than other similar programs. Elegant, nice look. Free!!!!
Cons
No option to extract from broken archives, or fix them, which WinRAR has. If one file in an archive is broken, B1 considers the entire archive corrupted. WinRAR seems a tab bit faster, but beggars can't be choosers.
Summary
B1 Archiver deserves way more recognition than it currently has. It's fast and easy to use. It is free. I work with some files which B1 confuses as broken, so I'd prefer WinRAR for advanced use. This is nice for extracting normal stuff like videos, though. It has support for many languages, and the setup's very fast. No optional software is offered (which is nice). Definitely download this, or 7-Zip, if you want a good and free compression software.

Everything else it can do, Winrar or 7zip can do much faster and without "downloading" stuff when you install/uninstall...

I downloaded this because I needed to open a .b1 file, and right away I noticed it was strange. When you install, it apparently requires an internet connection to do so, and it takes a long time. Whenever you actually open and use the program, it takes awhile to load up, as well. Also, if you unchecked the file extensions you didn't want to associate it with, well it doesn't seem to care. It will make every .zip, .7z, and .rar open with this sluggish program by default, and you will have to go back and reset all of that manually. :( When you uninstall it, it will have this weird "Downloading..." text on the uninstaller, like... What is it downloading? Spyware? Malware? Nothing should be downloaded when you uninstall a program, especially without permission or warning! I don't know if it actually did or not, because it didn't say where anything would be downloaded, and nothing happened after... well let's hope it's not a virus... Overall, I do not recommend using this, unless you DESPERATELY need to open a .b1 file, and can't find any alternative. Updated on Jun 2, 2014I honestly do not know how it got so many 5 star ratings... Unless maybe people were bribed, or they have never ever used other safer archivers?

Very fast. I needed to unzip a file that had a colon in its name. Winzip refused do it, and I couldn't find a work-around to force it. B1 Free Archiver solved my problem.

- Extremely intransparent installation procedure, that will lead to a download of ca. 10 MB. - Extremely slow - I could not get it to work within 10 minutes on Windows XPSP3 (I consider myself a highly experienced user) - Takes on file associations - despite explicitly telling the program other wise on setup - and allocates icons without asking - which is a gross super no-no!

My previous extractor started great, but lately started installing malware. I am so glad that I tried B1. It does exactly what I need. I would call it a no-frills extraction, but it actually has quite a few tricks that I like. I plan on being a loyal advocate for years to come. Very happy.
