Editors' Review
There is a new player in town--a new audio player, that is. The AtomicPlayer from Quux Software is a simple tool that lets you play your favorite audio files, as well as access numerous online radio stations. This free player will never be considered flashy by any means. The publishers have removed emphasis on what they consider to be irrelevant features (i.e., skins, visualizations, etc). What they do offer is a small, no-nonsense audio player interface that is intended as an alternative choice for individuals who just want to listen to music.
The AtomicPlayer may seem to be a bit technically challenged compared with its more famous counterparts, but its interface features the same audio controls and buttons required of a typical audio player. The program's emphasis is on playback quality and ease of use rather than appearance. However, it is quite capable of downloading album art, song lyrics, album and band information upon request, and displaying them in a clutter-free interface. Having different kinds of audio-file formats in your collection also presents no problem. This player will support virtually every audio format out there. It will provide straight-up music without the bling. Nothing more, nothing less!
One caveat though: While the fully featured AtomicPlayer is easy to install and opens with relative ease, it can be installed on Windows 7 or Vista machines only, having been built exclusively for the Windows Audio Session API. One other issue we did see during the test is that it will install a desktop icon without permission, but this minor issue doesn't offset this straightforward audio benefits.
