  We recently started using Aspose.Words for Java and have been happy. We are using Java on the backend and tried using Apache POI for parsing, manipulating and transforming the contents of the docx files. With the POI we found ourselves spending too much time fixing bugs and implementing missing functionality. Short of running Word on the server, Aspose.Words for Java is a way to go for a Java project involving processing MS Word documents. We use it to convert uploaded Word documents to HTML format, process it and then export the result back into DOCX or PDF while adding headers, footers and waternarks. I'm pleased to give Aspose.Words my team's best recommendations.

  Summary

  We've built a multi-tier web application with document editing as a core piece of functionality. One of our requirements was to export our proprietary document format into common end-user formats (Word, PDF, etc.). Initially, we chose the open-source software Pandoc to perform our exports. This worked for simple use-cases, but time-and-again, we encountered the constraints of edge-case bugs and a lack of flexibility around structuring and styling the output document. Also, the API was less than ideal - command-line, external to our app - which made handling the exceptional cases all the more difficult from our Java platform. We needed a more robust solution. Enter Aspose.Words for Java. Evaluating Aspose.Words for Java completely changed our approach to document generation, opening up a new world of possibilities for our app. The API is intuitive and, conceptually, maps very well to the basic abstractions of a Word document that any developer should be able to grasp. All of the features of Word are exposed to a high-degree of granularity, providing a level of control in document building that we had not found in our evaluation of other software packages. At the same time, the API's default behaviors are sensible, giving developers the power to accomplish a lot with a minimum of code. With Aspose.Words for Java, we were off the ground and running, fully-integrated with our existing app, in a matter of hours. The longer we worked with Aspose.Words, the more we found to like. As an intermediary step in our document export process, we're transforming our proprietary document format into HTML. The Aspose.Words API allowed us to directly import that HTML as the basis for our Word document creation. With the imported document as a starting point, we were able to easily traverse the Aspose Document's Node tree to individually style each section, paragraph, header to our specifications. Aspose.Words even embedded all of our image links in the resulting output document without any special handling on our part. Better still, we soon discovered that Aspose.Words fully respects CSS style declarations during HTML imports, providing us the ability to decouple our styling code from our business logic. That behavior alone gives us the ability to implement dynamic stylings for all of our document exports, a concept that has enabled us to build powerful new functionality we could not have achieved otherwise. Throw in the ability to export to PDF, and Aspose.Words for Java was a no-brainer for us.
