improves hard drive longevity with some G4 Macs

The Hard Drive Update 1 improves the longevity of some hard drives shipped in certain Power Mac G4 computers, including:

Power Mac G4 Cube
Power Mac G4 (AGP Graphics)
Power Mac G4 (Digital Audio)
Power Mac G4 (Gigabit Ethernet)
Power Mac G4 (Quicksilver)

Most drives do not need this update. You can check the drives in your computer by running this update. If the update is needed, a message will appear which says that "one or more hard drives in your system need updated firmware. " You will be allowed to quit (cancel) at this point in order to complete backup prior to the actual update. Important: It is strongly recommended that you back up the data on your hard drives to an external drive or removable media before running this update. Do not reset, shut down, or turn off power to your computer while updating the firmware. If an error occurs during the update process, your hard drive(s) may become unusable. In that case, all data on the drive(s) would be lost.

It shutdown the computer, haven't been able to get my mac to see the drive since, tried different jumpers, tried different drive combos etc, drive setup can't see it... Gonna try the ibm windows firmware update on my friend's pc tomorrow. glad i backed up first. fawk you apple.

...G4's hard drive!<br />This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />There is warning after warning to back up your data, so if you snooze and lose do not cry to Apple. THEY WARNED YOU! I am just glad to see Apple making hard drives in old G4's running Mac OS 9 last longer since that does not help them get people to buy the new dual 2GHZ G5 machines. Thanks Apple! BTW Version tracker, why is this listed as Shareware? It is a freeware update!

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />I Just ran the Hard Drive Update and it completely destroyed my HardDisk!! I rebooted to OS 9, Ran the updater (which finished with a finder crash). Following the instructions, I rebooted my computer and my Disk was gone! DiskUtility finds the drive and says it's zero (0) bytes!!! DONT USE IT!!!!!
