Despite a large list of proxy IPs, this browser add-on fails to live up to its most basic promise: finding a proxy IP for surfing anonymously.
Anonymous Friend installs as a toolbar with just a handful of buttons to access the Help file, register the program, and enable a proxy IP for your computer. It's simple to select an alternate IP from the drop-down box, but apparently not so easy to find one that works. We tried several with no success. At startup, you'll be directed to the publisher's Web site, where your actual IP address is displayed and they walk you through the process of assigning a proxy address.
Anonymous Friend also displays your IP address on the toolbar, supposedly showing your actual address when the program is disabled and the proxy address when enabled. The Web site showed our real IP address, but the toolbar never picked up the actual or the proxy. It wasn't clear where it was picking up the information from, but it never matched our records or those of its publisher. You might also have to forgo Java when using Anonymous Friend, as its Help file indicates that your real IP can be detected when Java is enabled.
Firefox users are out of luck. This toolbar only works with the Internet Explorer browser, but in our experience, it doesn't work so well in IE, either. There's a 40-use trial period for you to see how this privacy tool performs for you, but we're not recommending it.
