With this simple yet effective tool, creating and organizing notes is easy. Alot Notes has a basic interface that simply displays the list of notes as a tree display in the left pane and the contents of the highlighted note in the right pane. The interface icons may throw you a bit, but hover over them for guidance. You can input a text or spreadsheet note, and the notes are time-stamped with the exact time you began your entry. It has save options galore, including saving to the executable's database file, an external file, and a database backup. You can activate the stay-on-top feature for those individual notes you want to display. When you minimize the program, a small icon is placed on the lower-left side of your screen or in the system tray. Unfortunately, printing and hot-key features are missing. While the design won't mesmerize you, we consider this freeware a good notes option.
Best features are its small footprint, easy access and unobtrusive interface. Also noteworthy is the flexibility of either freeform text notes or table/spreadheet-type layout.
Cons
Since it has not been updated since 1999, it lacks a number of features that one would expect to find nowadays, including search, sort and hyperlinks.
Summary
I have been using Alot Notes for years, and despite its limitations, it remains the best easily accessible note application with a small footprint.
Extremely useful

Pros
(Also known as Magik Notes)

Stays active in memory, tray icon to hide/unhide.

All notes remain open, with a handy tree directory.

Supports spreadsheet-formatted notes as well as text.

Overall excellent for a notepad app -- I use it CONSTANTLY.
Cons
Like Notepad, Alot Notes doesn't support font styles or special characters, although the app's basic font can be changed to whatever you like. The Undo/Redo buffer doesn't support multiple changes, only the last one performed. No drag-n-drop.
