Although it lacks the expertise of competitive programs, this simple application provides effective Web site filtering. NetFilter PC operates alongside dial-up, network, or proxy server connections to block access to crass sites. Its insipid interface lets you schedule and block Internet access and e-mail communications. This visible spy tool sits in your system tray and presents a page informing the user when a site is banned and maintains logs of Web sites visited and images received in Notepad. Though it effectively blocks pornographic material and some other questionable sites during testing, you won't be able to add to or even see its filter list. NetFilter works with Internet Explorer and gives configuration settings to work with Netscape. The scant 10-day trial allows us to open its help page online using Firefox, but we aren't able to browse any further. It does provide impenetrable filtering; however, we think most users will want to have some say-so as to what goes on.
