• Get the 5400C software = sj668en.exe It works!!!

  Download the 62 Mb software for the 5400c and install that. Choose as TWAIN WIA-Hewlett-Packard Scanjet 5100C. (Could be coming on my PC from an earlier try with other software). It now works with IrfanView. Not (yet) with the HP Precisionscan Pro icon on the desktop. <p>Install this software with unconnected scannner. Shut down the PC, connect the scanner and restart the PC. <p>In my case this did the trick op Windows XP SP2 Dutch. <p>Good luck!

  All the negative comments about HP are well deserved. If not the worst for support they have to be a close second place. It's been like that for years, too. It might comfort you to know that HP doesn't discriminate against individual endusers: They treat their corporate customers with equal disdain. I work for a major aerospace corporation that contracted with HP for computer systems a few years back. Bad move: Their equipment was very unreliable, as was their support. My company dumped the equipment before the contract even ended. Once the king of superb laser printers (Laserjet II, III & 4 series) they've done nothing but go downhill from there. It's only a matter of time before they'll no longer be a contender in the computer related market.

• Successfully Installing Drivers with ME

  With all the problems everyone seems to have - my memory slipped to a solution I read ages ago - worth repeating here Put the original CD software and start the install and hold the shift key down You still get the message that the maching is not a win 95 machine etc but press ok and the software installs (if shift does not work try ctrl or alt - one of them definitely does) follow instructions and then install the updated drivers you have just downloaded from here You may get a few error messages or can't find files but it works at the end of it Good Luck

  the solution for Windows XP is the following: download HP5200C drivers(sj662en.exe) install them reset pc, with scanner connected, then install update sj660mu.exe, reset your pc again, and ik works fine under XP
