As its name implies, Google Books Downloader converts Google Books into PDFs or images available for offline viewing. This very basic software comes with just a handful of options and requires the URL of the book you'd like to download; there is no in-app Google Book store.

Pros

Easy to use: With its main window featuring just a few options, Google Books Downloader is very easy to use. The hardest part is getting the correct book URL from Google Books.

Fast: We tested the app with a 220-page book. Once we pressed Start, it took 3 minutes and 33 seconds for the book to be downloaded, converted, and saved to our desktop.

Features handy options: Despite its basic nature, the app does come with a handful of useful options, namely image resolution, output format, and output directory. The software can generate PDF books as well as JPEG/PNG images with a resolution of up to 1280 pixels.

Cons

Shaky legal ground: Unlike most of its other services, Google ships its books with DRM, meaning that you have to use software approved by Google in order to read its books. This app circumvents this limitation and may be considered unlawful by some.

Bottom Line

If you enjoy Google Books but don't like the idea of reading a book in your Web browser, you may appreciate the convenience of the Google Books Downloader. This freeware is extremely easy to use and will save your book for offline reading in minutes.

Doesn't Work. It appears that the utility is purposely designed to only download 50 pages so that you will try to then download the full version and who knows what might happen then, could be a link to malware.

wow. download.com really? five star editors review software with malware/spyware/hijacker all in one? Download.com used to screen their content for stuff like this, not anymore. I downloaded and installed, got all my browsers hijacked, got bomarded with horrible looking ads, in fear of losing my passwords, etc. spent hours fixing the issue on my pc. This will be the last time I use this site, good luck with your new business model, scheming users

This little piece of software is a life saver. It does what more expensive software could not. Google Books Download is fast quick easy and effective, I LOVE IT.

The software actually works and will download a max of 3 books per day. You can download the whole book as long as its full view.
Cons
It installs Claro Search and Claro Toolbar into browsers which is a malware trojan like Babylon search. It collects your personal info passwords, credit card numbers etc. Its tricky to remove, installs into the registry and will undo your firewalls and override security settings in your browser and take over your home page. Its basically another story just like Babylon Search - which i though CNet had fixed. The Google Book Downloader program itself limits you to 3 books per day and the file downloaded is usually a PDF Image which means that the resulting file can not be searched for text. If you can convert using OCR then you will probably not have any issue with this.

Cannot retrieve all parts of a Google book (since Google restricts access) Downloaded PDF does not appear to have OCR data in it, you need to run OCR yourself after downloading. Apparently Google doesn't store the OCR data with the PDF?
Summary
Works fairly well (got 1/3 of pages before Google blocked the access requests) but leaves a lot to be desired. But it's not like many other programs can get more out of Google.

It would be great if it worked, Goo Reader charge for what should be a built in feature to Google Books.

I downoaded it today and tried to create a pdf. The book was created but most of the pages would not read properly with Foxit Reader.

Currently, you can purchase books (U.S. only) or download more than three million free books from anywhere in the world using this service. As announced by Google, the aim of this project is to provide users with their own bookshelf on hand, no matter where they are. Purchased or downloaded books can be read using a desktop browser, as well as through mobile devices based on the Android operating system or iOS. Additionally, the books can be read on any e-reader with Adobe Digital Editions software. As opposed to the Picasa service which provides an access to photos, the Google Books service does not allow users to download free electronic editions without digital copy protection and use them on other devices.
