• Still unreliable!

  Can't trust the backups or restores! The support is horrible. They don't stand behind their software in terms of support or refunds.

  Summary

  Backups are VERY important. Therefore, you have to have complete faith that a backup application backs up what you tell AND that it can successfully restore what it backed up. Unfortunately, I couldn't trust this application to do either of those tasks. I would stay away from this app and find another backup solution.

  Genie Backup Manager Pro offers several improvements over Windows 7 backup. Just to name a few: - Multiple kinds of backups. Full, Mirror, Incremental, or Differential. - Choice between compressed backup and backup in native Windows format. - Choice between secured and unsecured backup. - Multiple backups. The user can create several different backups, defining each as desired, and running them at different times as desired. - Excellent Catalog feature. Catalog is essentially an Incremental Backup Manager. When searching an incremental backup for a file, the user designates an "As Of" date. Catalog then presents the user with several useful choices: all files, new files, modified files, deleted files, and so forth. The new version 9.0 brings several improvements over 8.0 - more speed, a cleaner interface,and enough new bells and whistles to justify a new version.

  Cons

  1. You have to pay for it. 2. For users not familiar with previous versions, Backup Manager does require some self-education, and at least some knowledge of Windows file and folder structure. It is not an "install it and forget it" product. Each backup created by the user does need to be defined, and needs to be scheduled. But that's about it. For the user willing to pay for a backup product and to invest a little time learning how to use it, Backup Manger really delivers.

  - Unreliable backups (file/folder selections were incorrect after 1st backup) - Backup speed is MUCH slower than competitive apps - No response when requesting a refund - So far, Money-Back Guarantee is a lie - Not a US-based company

  Backups have to be reliable. Unfortunately, you cannot rely on this application's backups. After configuring which files and folders I wanted backed up, the first backup was successful. Every subsequent backup left out some of the selected files and folders. When I went back to look at the configuration, the selection list was corrupted and did not show all of the selections. The next day, I entered a support ticket identifying the issue and requesting a refund. The support person's emails were polite but didn't address my request for a refund. I continued to request a refund and the replies from Support/Sales ceased. Take away whatever you will from my experience. I would say that I bear most of the responsibility for not thoroughly testing the app using a trial version. However, the site clearly states that they have a money-back guarantee. So far, they have not stood behind that money-back guarantee. Since I am in the US and the company appears to be Jordanian, it is not much one can do if they choose not to refund the money. I have since uninstalled their app and replace it with another one. The replacement runs flawlessly. I will not mention the competitor's app. Mainly becasue I don't want anyone to think that this is a ad for another backup app. These are solely my opinions from my experience with Genie Backup Manager v8. The bottom line is that, knowing what I know now, I would not waste my time or money on this product. If you do choose to waste your time, please test it thoroughly before paying for it.

  The best thing that I can say about this software is that it loaded.

  Cons

  This product did not work. Each time, I ran the backup, I received error messages. It is very disappointing, particularly, since it took about 15 hours to run the backup. I tried it a second time and same thing.--error messages.

  Reliable; Tested successfully on 2 laptops; XP Pro 32-bit, and Vista Premium 64-bit. Fast; Disaster Recovery on USB HD in 3:42 hrs (250 GB/90 GB used), DVDs in 4:18 hrs. Simple; Backs up documents, music, and pictures, and also critical system files

  Many programs do backup, others do System Recovery. But the ones that do both with comforting reliability, speed, and simplicity are very few. Out of the 3 I tried; Genie Backup Manager Pro 8 stands out with shiny stars. Save and Restore made my CD drive disappear. I had to uninstall and use Window Restore to get it back. True Image Home 2009 trial did the job, but it was a bit slower than GBM, and I could not test the system restore functionality in trial. GBM is more user friendly, but I guess this is a personal preference. With GBM Pro trial you can try the whole thing for a month. This gave me assurance and reflects the company?s confidence in their product. If you decide to try GBM Pro, make sure to download the right file for your computer; 32-bit or 64-bit. I tested GBM Pro on 2 laptops; XP Pro 32-bit, and Vista Premium 64-bit. I created Disaster Recovery on USB HD in 3:42 hrs (250 GB/90 GB used), including Integrity Test. It did the same job on 6 DVDs in 4:18 hrs. I created initial full backup and scheduled incremental backup. It ran successfully on schedule even with Sleep mode. It defaults to backing up typical documents, music, and pictures, and also critical system files, and any additions or exclusions you want. All jobs are completed within Windows while I was working. I had some inquiries and wanted to test the company?s support. I used ticket system on the company?s site and I got courteous knowledgably responses in less than 12 hours. With that kind of service and with such a reliable product, I did not wait for the trial period to end and placed my order on the company?s site. I receive my license in less than 1 minuet, and all I did to register my trial version is to paste it on the registration window. Genie Backup Manager Pro 8 is definitely worth trying, You virtually have the full functionality for 30 days to get to the confidence and comfort level you need to commit to buying a utility that is a must have for every computer.

• Not Ready For Prime Time

  The latest build crashes every day. It has a built-in reporting tool that evidently is supposed to send an error report to Genie-Soft but it cannot find the recipient so the email gets bounced back. Their "web update" feature does not work at all. I have reported it to them and their answer is to "manually" update since that feature has not been implemented yet, (try removing the button from the software then!). Every update brings new problems...suffice to say I would keep shopping. GBM Pro 8 is a pile of junk!

  Pros

  "Genie-Soft" has made a huge improvement over version 7. It's now fully compatible with "Vista" and the "Vista Disaster Recovery" module is an excellent tool. It has a great GUI and pretty much does everything it claims it will. Like I said, this release is like night and day compared to version 7, which was useless. It can now backup your whole system including your operating system, applications, files, folders, photos music, downloaded movies and emails. I like this application but doubt it's for everyone. This may be the most improved software application of 2007. I have used it and it works like a charm.

  Cons

  It 's kind of a big install at 175 MB on disk. It's expensive and not that easy to use. It does take some time in the help files to figure it out. If you are good with software and computer knowledge, if you are willing to take the time to learn how to use it and are willing to spend $70 then this is a good choice although it's not a disk cloning application.
