It has a filename filter so you can easily narrow down your search to only a specific type of file or filename to work with. You can also remove x number of characters starting from x character and even find and replace text. In addition to its renaming capabilities, it also has a built-in ID3v1 and ID3v2 tag editor.

Does NOT rename in full order!

Excellent when renaming files from 01 to 99 ONLY ;-(
Cons
Fails to rename properly files from 100 and up. It lines up the renamed files from 001 to 010, and then jumps straight to 100, skilling 011, 012, etc. That sucks because no matter what you do, the skipping is unavoidable ;-(
Summary
Great ONLY for files from 1 to 99, but if you want to renames 101 files (which for example are sequential images of a scanned book), you're in a huge trouble because it will mess them up like a preschooler ;-(

Does not work with Win 10. I could access directories, but, even with the "*.*" file filter, it would not show even one file within the currently selected directory.

If you have Win 10, don't bother.

NONE. Maybe a sexier interface but really, who cares. Otherwise, perfect.

This software is perfect. The editor reviews are right on the money. I normally don't return to leave a review but I had to give kudos to the developer of File Renamer. I had a piece of junk software from Canon (ImageBrowser EX) that batch renamed photos downloaded from their cameras. But over the course of several years, Canon refuses to fix installation bugs OR just freakin' sunset the software, so I was left with no quick method to rename files. File Renamer does everything I need and more. If you just need an app to batch file naming needs, look no further. I think I'll go to the developer's site and make a donation. Going forward, charge something! Your software is 100% worth it.

Summary
I'm the parent-photographer for a variety of school events, and this does wonderfully in letting me manage the photo file names. But this may be a simple application, compared to what others might need. However, it did overcame great shortcomings I'd found in the Windows' filename renaming limitations. With existing renaming Windows capabilities I could do the very basic things such as adding given text to the start of the filename, e.g. 2015 ABC XC for school name ABC and cross country, but that inserted the text "(1)", "(2)", . . . "(100)". In posting the photos it would end up in the order of (1), (10), (100), (11), (12) . . Or something like that. This software allows me to easily: 1) add given text out front; 2) define the number places I wanted in the counting number (e.g. 0000 gives me 1 thousand photos in my count, starting with 0001); 3) define the starting count number (so I can add photos to start counting after the last photo already posted; 4) add text after the counting numbers. So, for the school (assuming it's XYZ) and XC (for cross country) I can easily end up with filenames like "2015 XYZ XC (0251) Springfield Scrimmage" for photos 0001 - 0251, then something like "2015 XYZ XC (0252) Centerville Meet" for photos 0252 . . 0501. Now it easily displays and is tracked in the order the photos were taken, but also includes specifics like where the meet was. Excellent, but maybe simple needs.

Has a preview mode so you see what all the "new" file names will be before you commit. Saves me loads of time renaming files one-at-a-time to conform with our crappy web publishing program at work (no spaces, no caps, etc.) Keeps me from strangling co-workers who insist on using non-standard characters (#$%) by allowing me to quickly remove them from file names Free is always good

Pros
1. Ease of changing filename on the fly when selecting several groups of pics. I export my camera pics every 2 months so there are multiple events. 2. Programmer considered Control- and Shift-Click for selecting files and then right click to check the files. Nice feature.
Cons
1. Buggy with selecting files to rename on Win7. Control- and Shift-click functionality also selects other files farther down the list but is obviously visible on the screen. 2. It would be nice if it had the ability to preview multiple .jpg on screen rather than 'Open'.
Summary
I'll use this product since the UI is excellent. I can overcome the quirky functionality.
New version keeps crashing

Summary
New version crashes on Windows Vista even after complete uninstall / re-install. Appears the uninstall of the previous version screwed up and deleted registry entries for Roxio Creator Basic. I have totally deleted the software so I could re-install Roxio and have Roxio work.

Summary
I downloaded File Rename Basic in conjunction with Batch Rename .EXE (two of the top reviewed renames that met my needs.). While both of them provided the solution I needed, I felt File Rename Basic was little more cluttered and slower then batch rename was. In the end I decided to uninstall File Rename Basic; not to say it does not work as needed - just there are better program out there for this kind of work.
