CNET Editors' review
OhSoft's oCam is a freeware screen capture utility that packs its own codecs, including hi-fi audio codecs from the open-source LAME project, for real-time recording of onscreen video and system sounds. As with similar tools, oCam also takes screenshots, including full-screen, windows, or selected areas. It captures cursor motion and other onscreen activity, too, and it supports large recordings of up to 4GB. Among other upgrades, the latest release of oCam, v13, adds Flash video codecs, improved scheduling of recordings, and better real-time audio encoding. It's compatible with Windows versions XP to 8, including Server 2008.
With a gadget-like user interface and separate selection window, oCam's draggable, two-part user interface is small enough to sit in a corner of your desktop yet large enough to be easy to spot when you need it. Seven buttons in a row access all of oCam's features and options: "Record," "Capture," "Resize," "Open," "Options," "Codec," and "Info." If you've ever used a screen capture tool before, nearly all of oCam's controls will be familiar, as will be the procedure: For example, to capture a section of our desktop, we dragged oCam's green-bordered, transparent selection window over the area in question and pressed "Record." The program recorded all screen activity in the selection box, which for our purposes consisted of some quick mousing. Pressing "Stop" saved the video in the format and destination we selected in the Options sheet. Likewise, pressing "Capture" took a snapshot of the selected area. The "Resize" button selects preset capture areas -- a handy feature for standardizing images.
We noted that nearly all of oCam's controls will be familiar to most users. The single (and notable) exception is the Codecs button. Pressing it calls up a menu of installed audio and video codecs, including LAME. We just had to select the codec we wanted on the menu, and oCam did the rest. Dedicated codecs mean oCam can record high-quality audio or video no matter what codecs your system or media player is using. It's definitely worth a look.

"Can't Find Common Files Directory (Windows 8.1)"
Version: oCam 18.5
Don't know. Can't Get It To Install.
Can't Get It To Install is one
HOW IS IT a program is developed A YEAR AFTER THE WINDOWS 8 ROLLOUT (And SEVERAL years after the rollout of Windows 7) that some companies & developers STILL don't know that 64 Bit operating systems have THEIR OWN directories for PROGRAM FILES & COMMON FILES & ITS ALL DIFFERENT ???
Is it these people just don't bother to learn ?? Or do they somehow think THE WORLD is THEIR SCIENCE LAB RAT ?? Maybe it's BOTH ???
"Malware in disguise"
Version: oCam 16.0
easy to use, light interface
It installed some really nasty malware that bogged my pc down by constantly downloading spyware. eventually it started crashing my system.
"Great Program for Video Capture almost! See the summary"
Version: oCam 16.0
Quick to install and use
Easy to start capturing screen activity or video on screen
Every time you launch the program it "Phones Home"
If you do not have a network connection it will not work.
If you block traffic to and from OHSOFT.NET it detects that and will not run.
I downloaded version 13 and had it running on my Windows 8 box just fine for months. I have now upgraded to my computer to Windows 8.1 and today when I went to use it OCam, it forced a download of version 16 that crashed multiple times. It now no longer runs as it is triggering windows security alerts (maybe due to the software phoning home) or is it spying on you? Don't believe me? On a your Windows computer edit your "%windir%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts" file and set ohsoft.net to resolve to localhost (Add a line at the bottom of the file with "127.0.0.1 ohsoft.net") and try to run the program. It pops up a message once or twice, telling you "Windows Hosts file tampering detected" and exits the program. I would have given this five stars but now it only deserves 2. Its a great video capture program but if you can't trust what else it is capturing...
"Fab freeware better than many pricey competitors."
Version: oCam 16.0
Very sharp recording. I ran this on action scenes and oCam
produced a recording free of blurs with excellent color. Could not
buy better. And the video was instantly produced, just stop the
recording and bam! you have your video. It also offers an
adjustable capture area as well as many different codecs so you
should a find a working codec for virtually any purpose.
oCam does not offer a pause button.
Some have noted oCam does not offer an editing option. True, but
it does not offer itself as an editor, just a screen capture and,
at that, it's tops in my book.
I don't think oCam can be beaten for freeware. And as for screen
recorders that come with a price tag, many thanks to member
free_usa_shipping who reviewed Screencast-O-Matic Premium and
revealed even though (s)he had paid for Screencast-O-Matic (s)he
had discontinued using it in favor of oCam.
Try oCam before you buy another screen recorder. This fine bit of
freeware probably has everything you need.
And sincere thanks to Oh!Soft.
"Excellent screen video recording"
Version: oCam 16.0
Easy to use, easy to resize capture area to just where you want. No limit to video length (well, I think 4g, but that's way more than I need!) Small intuitive GUI, quality is excellent, just what I wanted after rtmpexplorer wouldn't work on my system and applian replay video capture couldn't find the area I wanted to record.
None. I think it tried to install a homepage or some other ad thing, but you'll almost always have that with freeware. Just uncheck boxes.
Highly recommend. And this software is not a trial, works perfectly out of the box.
"Good Program Gone Bad"
Version: oCam 14.0
oCam used to be a good, clean program that has all the features you wan. Full screen recording, audio device selection and video codec selection.
Unfortunately oCam auto-updates and there is no way I know of to disable this. I could, I suppose, find the file its using for the process and replace it with a blank text document - that's a trick that has worked before, but I just don't want this on my system anymore.
I am an intermediate-advanced level computer user with experience in windows 98, 2000, XP and 7. Built my own computer, installed the operating system multiple times. I know all the tricks you need to watch for when installing new programs, and even the recent tricks you have to watch out for when uninstalling them.
When I installed oCam it was, as I remember, clean of all extra garbage. But after a recent auto-update I turned on my TV to find an install box for Freenum - some sort of game. oCam is the most likely suspect. I suspect it snuck this thing in through its auto-update. Worse I can not find the startup registry entry or service for this, or any information on it online.
So I no longer trust oCam, and have decided to throw it in the trash along with CamStudio as of version 2.7, and HyCam. I do not recommend you use any of these programs. I am making a YouTube video covering this in more detail at my YouTube channel - just look up DreamBliss or DreamBliss Flows.
NOTE TO THE WEBADMIN:
You might want to fix these forms to remember the text entered. I selected the dropdown version box below and lost everything I typed. Had to do it all over again. Very frustrating!
"Laggy and was just okay"
Version: oCam 16.0
Was simple to use
NO audio for demo versoin
Yeah, not much.
"Less Than 1 Star"
Version: oCam 16.0
None. It does NOT work if you do not let it slow down your computer by being in the start-up menu.
It does NOT work if you do not let it slow down your computer by being in the start-up menu. Computer kept freezing up after download. Disabled it from the startup menu and then tried to use it. All it does is give a prompt to download the UpGrade. If it works like this then why upgrade? Upgrade to what, another upgrade prompter?
Felt strongly enough about it to spend 30-minutes of hassle creating an account here because I felt robbed of good moments of my life wasting them on this thing that won't do anything except freeze up a computer. Go with screen-o-cast or whatever the superior one to this one is. This is useless junk that may very well be nothing more than glorified malware disguised as a product. Now my computer is acting strange.I decided after doing more research to delete this review because my experience wasn't typical results, but the option to delete the review is not available. Just try it for yourself. Maybe I had conflicting software problems.

"Wow, so far so good :)"
Version: oCam 16.0
It does exactly what I need; nice quality video and audio with very easy to understand buttons. Press record to record and F2 to stop.
The videos show up in my oCam folder as soon as i hit F2 with no formatting needed and they play well in Media player right away.
it takes the sound right from my internal mic, whatever sound is played on my computer.
The resizing box is easy to place where you want to capture the video.
This is very good.
There is no pause or editing, but I don't need these things for simply capturing training webinars.
I haven't tested out the limits on the 4gb video size. I had a bad experience with camstudio files not working over 2gb, so I don't want to push it with this software since it works so nicely.
Nice quality video and audio, VERY easy to use for a novice like me. Very happy with this software.
Pretty idiot proof, VERY happy.
"The best capture software."
Version: oCam 14.0
The best and easiest to use screen capture software - and its free! I've tried many others but this is the best. It records to avi and yet the file sizes are quite small, but with good quality audio/visual. It also doesn't use up much ram memory when in use and you can easily view vids when recording has finished. You can also easily capture still screen shots.
None that I can see.
