CNET Editors' review
Doing for Gmail what the MailTo link does for Outlook, the wonderfully simple gAttach is a small utility that reassigns Gmail as the default mail account from Windows documents. With gAttach installed, selecting Send from Windows Explorer, Firefox, and Microsoft Office automatically attaches the files to a Gmail composition instead of opening Outlook mail. Though effortless, we wish we could associate some file types with gAttach and let others default to Outlook. Also missing is a way for gAttach to automatically divide, where possible, e-mail compositions that breach the 20MB upload limit.
Publisher's Description
From Chris Wood:
gAttach allows you to easily attach files to new messages in Gmail or Google Apps Mail. All the features available in Windows that were once only available to your desktop mail-using friends are now available to all Gmail users. With gAttach!, you can: send emails directly from: Windows Explorer, Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, Windows Live Photo Gallery, Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox; automatically attach files from your PC to a new email without manually uploading each file; choose to suppress the annoying standard text provided by Windows ("Your attachments are ready to send.."); handle "mailto" email links in web pages. "very nice, works well"
Version: gAttach 1.2008.7.2
Pros
Does just what is is suppose to do!
Cons
None yet...Don't really expect any.
Summary
Nice not to have it try to go anywhere but where you want it- gmail, sometimes, so very good program.
-
"Failed completely."
Version: gAttach 1.2008.7.2
Pros
None, since the program did not manage anything at all, other than displaying some official looking progress bars and completion messages.
Cons
I made many attempts, with various settings, following uneventful installs. Each time it stated that it sent a draft including intended attachment to Gmail 'Drafts' folder. Alleged draft never appeared. Period.
Summary
This software proved to be useless, at least to me. Running Vista Home Premium, 32-bit.

"Discontinued by the developer Chris Wood"
Version: gAttach 1.2008.7.2
Pros
The developer recommends using his new program named Affixa
Cons
Doesn't work anymore, and not under development.
Summary
Good idea, shame it's gone.

"Provides quick access to online-site email sends"
Version: gAttach 1.2008.7.2
Pros
It's simple and works. If Linux becomes as easy we might break the MS stranglehold!. I don't like all the 1 star "It doesn't work" comments skewing the rating so I gave 5 stars to better reflect it's excellence. Few things are Spectacular!
Cons
The attachment size could be a little bigger and the "attaching" speed could be quicker. There is probably a "premium" account which offers this but I don't think Google really needs more money to offer a little more user friendliness!
Summary
I appreciate any software that gives people an opportunity to break from the Microsoft mold. I don't like Outlook as it is one more way for Microsoft to retain a monopoly on people's (computer) lives. I never even bothered to learn how to use it as I didn't like the way it took over my computer. If people are having a hard time configuring
After re-reading my review I realized it had been largely related to the Gmail function itself. gAttach is separate software and I should have confined my comments and 5 star rating to gAttach which deserves every star!
gAttach or getting it to work, it is likely because of Outlook being embedded into there office (or other) computer software.
