File deletion ought to be painless, and with XL Delete it mostly is. The drag-and-drop interface makes it easy to select files and folders for elimination. From there, you get 12 preset deletion options, including the simple, fast, and fairly insecure Random method and the powerful 35-pass Gutmann. If you know what you're doing, you even can create your own custom deletion algorithm. In our tests, using the Gutmann method XL Delete erased a 1GB file in about 20 minutes. Additional features include a task scheduler, a Free Space Wipe option, and the ability to clean IE and Firefox traces. The program also comes with a well-written help file and a step-by-step wizard for neophytes. Overall, XL Delete ought to satisfy home- or small-office users who just need the digital equivalent of a file shredder.Publisher's description
From -XL- Development :XL Delete is a delete tool that will permanently delete files using its powerful wipe engine. XL Delete can permanently remove any type of file, entire folders, and even your Internet Explorer and Firefox cookies, history, and cache files. When you delete a file and empty the Recycle Bin, the file is in fact still on your hard drive. Windows marks the area where the file is on the hard drive as over-writable so it can reuse the space when necessary. This allows special data-recovery software to actually undelete the file and view all its original contents. When you delete a file with XL Delete, the file data actually will be overwritten several times using specialized data to prevent data-recovery software from being able to undelete the file. XL Delete also will incorporate several obfuscation techniques to hide the original filename and file size from data-recovery software.
