Publisher's Description
From Microsoft:
Windows Live SkyDrive is a free online file-storage system. For each folder you create, you choose who has access to it. Add new folders, rename them, or change who has access at any time. It includes 5GB of free online storage, available from any computer with Internet access; it offers personal, shared, and public folders -- you decide who has access to each folder; and it works well on any Windows or Macintosh computer with Firefox 1.5 or higher, or Internet Explorer 6 or higher. Your personal folders are password-protected with your Windows Live ID, so only you have access. When you create a shared folder, the friends you're sharing with need to sign in with their own Windows Live ID and password.Just like at your online bank, all file transfers are protected using Secure Socket Layers (SSL).

Cons
Huge chunk of WINXP users shut out ...
Summary
Might be good unless you are locked in to XP.

"Not ready for primetime"
Version: Windows Live SkyDrive
Pros
Cheap, easy to use
Cons
Basic features lacking
Summary
I upgraded to 20GB storage for $10/year which is very cheap. However there are several limitations with skydrive. Some are very annoying.
1. It only syncs folders under the skydrive root folder on the PC. I have folders in several places on my PC and would like to leave them there since other applications expect them in those places. Skydrive will not back these up to the cloud until I move or copy the folders under the root skydrive folder. What is this 1990?
2. You cannot do a one way sync from PC to Skydrive only. I have several GB worth of pictures and videos I rarely see and just want them archived on the cloud but skydrive will only do two way sync forcing me to keep them on my PC which defeats the whole purpose.
3. Any device you add to your skydrive account will have all folders downloaded. In essence skydrive mirrors it's contents on each device you specified. I don't want everything mirrored everywhere for Pete's sake.
4. All the above can be mitigated if you do not use the client but only use the web version. But then you have to remember what to upload from which folder. Pretty limiting.
The irritants seem so basic. For a company that prides itself on being the largest software company in the world, Microsoft appears to have rushed to put out a product that looks like a high school project. Hopefully they improve it. Soon. -
"Doesn't compare to Dropbox"
Version: Windows Live SkyDrive
Pros
Cheap and fairly simply.
Cons
Relatively primitive and unimaginative. Constantly issues warnings that certain characters are not permitted for naming folders, as if this were 1983.
Summary
Though I paid for SkyDrive space, I barely use it, but constantly use Dropbox, which is more directly integrated into my work habits.

"Good but could be great"
Version: Windows Live SkyDrive
Pros
free cloud space that is shareable.
2Gb file size limit better than earlier limits.Cons
Cannot find a way to give write permission to others to add files to a folder shared with others.

"Good & Bad"
Version: Windows Live SkyDrive
Pros
You can upload any of this (Documents, Photos, Videos, etc..) Plus you can have the iPhone & iPad App to see your documents in the cloud.
Cons
The PC App is giving me this error: (A file or folder can't be downloaded because the path is too long. Please exit and restart SkyDrive, and then pick a location with a shorter path). Comeon Is this a HardDrive on the CLOUD or not?
Summary
I got it use it online only. Kind of Sucks!!!

"Should Still Be in Beta"
Version: Windows Live SkyDrive
Pros
Interfaces with Microsoft Office Products
Cons
Loses data, poor "saving" ability, can't easily see what teammates are working on.
Summary
This is inferior to Google Docs in terms of usability, trustworthiness, and ease of collaboration. The only advantage is the ability to use tables, charts, and graphs from Microsoft Office, which is impossible with Google Docs. Joining, sharing, and editing are all tedious.

"Happy if I can have my work backed up on a cloud,"
Version: Windows Live SkyDrive
Pros
I have spent many days looking at the various options but SkyDrive has a lot going for it. As I have a huge and lengthy task a head of me, the time spent on the transfer of data is more important than the cost of using the software.
Cons
I am not sure if it would be possible to transfer folders containing Word Documents; PDF and photographs, then it would be 5 Star.
Summary
Possibly the best way is to download it and do some experimenting, thank you all for the reviews.

"Could be great"
Version: Windows Live SkyDrive
Pros
Free is always good.
Cons
The size limit per file is a big con and it would be nice to have a way to use a backup program to ftp to the site automatically. Change these and it goes to 5 stars
