"Reliable on Windows 7"

October 31, 2013  |  By javelinadream

 |  Version: Not Found

Pros

SkyDrive is easier to access and faster than Google Drive, regardless of browser. Even though I really like Google, I use too many Google services, so SkyDrive and DropBox are good alternatives.

Cons

The newest update seems a little less reliable when syncing from my desktop. Also, file naming is awkward as mentioned in the other reviews.

Summary

For Windows users, Skydrive is a convenient alternative to Google Drive.

"Will not work for most business"

September 12, 2013  |  By inaun

 |  Version: Not Found

Pros

Cheap, included with Office 365, integrates "out of the box" with Office

Cons

Severe filename limitations will make this worthless (or way too much work) for most companies wanting to use Skydrive as cloud-based file storage.

For example, "&" is an invalid character. Users commonly name files with an "&" in them ("Red & White banner.jpg")! Likewiase, # is "invalid". I have two users who name their files "Contract #1", "Contract rev #2", etc. All of the file restrictions make user training far too expensive and difficult.

Summary

Microsoft wants to be a big player in the cloud paradigm. Their cloud file offering falls far short of this goal. Fine for home users / tiny companies who can put up with the resrictions. Non-player for companies needing to support even a small handfull of users.

"Not ready for primetime"

August 25, 2012  |  By prakasheas

 |  Version: Not Found

Pros

Cheap, easy to use

Cons

Basic features lacking

Summary

I upgraded to 20GB storage for $10/year which is very cheap. However there are several limitations with skydrive. Some are very annoying.
1. It only syncs folders under the skydrive root folder on the PC. I have folders in several places on my PC and would like to leave them there since other applications expect them in those places. Skydrive will not back these up to the cloud until I move or copy the folders under the root skydrive folder. What is this 1990?
2. You cannot do a one way sync from PC to Skydrive only. I have several GB worth of pictures and videos I rarely see and just want them archived on the cloud but skydrive will only do two way sync forcing me to keep them on my PC which defeats the whole purpose.
3. Any device you add to your skydrive account will have all folders downloaded. In essence skydrive mirrors it's contents on each device you specified. I don't want everything mirrored everywhere for Pete's sake.
4. All the above can be mitigated if you do not use the client but only use the web version. But then you have to remember what to upload from which folder. Pretty limiting.

The irritants seem so basic. For a company that prides itself on being the largest software company in the world, Microsoft appears to have rushed to put out a product that looks like a high school project. Hopefully they improve it. Soon.

"Doesn't compare to Dropbox"

August 14, 2012  |  By nicmart

 |  Version: Not Found

Pros

Cheap and fairly simply.

Cons

Relatively primitive and unimaginative. Constantly issues warnings that certain characters are not permitted for naming folders, as if this were 1983.

Summary

Though I paid for SkyDrive space, I barely use it, but constantly use Dropbox, which is more directly integrated into my work habits.

"Good & Bad"

May 01, 2012  |  By GabMedina83

 |  Version: Not Found

Pros

You can upload any of this (Documents, Photos, Videos, etc..) Plus you can have the iPhone & iPad App to see your documents in the cloud.

Cons

The PC App is giving me this error: (A file or folder can't be downloaded because the path is too long. Please exit and restart SkyDrive, and then pick a location with a shorter path). Comeon Is this a HardDrive on the CLOUD or not?

Summary

I got it use it online only. Kind of Sucks!!!

"Should Still Be in Beta"

September 28, 2011  |  By soytsauce

 |  Version: Not Found

Pros

Interfaces with Microsoft Office Products

Cons

Loses data, poor "saving" ability, can't easily see what teammates are working on.

Summary

This is inferior to Google Docs in terms of usability, trustworthiness, and ease of collaboration. The only advantage is the ability to use tables, charts, and graphs from Microsoft Office, which is impossible with Google Docs. Joining, sharing, and editing are all tedious.
