WinSCP is a free, open-source SFTP, FTP, and SCP client for Windows that enables secure file transfer between a local and a remote computer. It supports popular protocols such as SFTP, SCP, FTP, and WebDAV, making it a versatile tool for developers, administrators, and everyday users. It is known for its reliability and ease of use.

The software features a dual-pane interface for intuitive file navigation and transfers. WinSCP integrates with external applications, supports scripting, and enables automation for advanced tasks. Combining simplicity with functionality, it lets users securely manage and transfer files without complex setup or extensive technical knowledge.

Powerful features and flexibility

WinSCP offers a range of useful features such as secure file transfer using multiple protocols, including SFTP and SCP. Its dual-pane interface allows easy drag-and-drop operations between local and remote systems. The program supports file synchronization, batch processing, and integration with PuTTY for SSH connections. However, its interface can feel dated compared to modern alternatives, which can discourage users seeking a more polished, contemporary design despite its otherwise comprehensive functionality.

Customization is another strong point. Users can choose between different interface modes, including a Commander-style view and an Explorer-style view. This flexibility caters to both advanced users and beginners. However, the program is available only for Windows, limiting cross-platform use, and its advanced features often require initial setup, which can be inconvenient for those seeking an immediately ready-to-use solution despite its scripting, command-line operations, and task automation capabilities for IT professionals.

When compared to alternatives such as FileZilla and Cyberduck, this program stands out due to its secure protocol support and built-in scripting capabilities. While FileZilla is often preferred for FTP-only transfers, this software is better suited for users requiring stronger security and advanced automation. Its open-source nature ensures continuous updates, community-driven improvements, and long-term reliability, making it a dependable choice for those needing a robust, secure file transfer solution.

WinSCP can copy files between a local and remote computer using multiple protocols: FTP, FTPS, SCP, SFTP, WebDAV or S3. You can start editing a file directly from WinSCP, either using WinSCP internal text editor or using integration with your favorite external text editor. After connecting to a site you can choose to store site information for repeated access, WinSCP can even share site settings with another popular open source tool PuTTY. WinSCP integrates also with Pageant (PuTTY authentication agent) for full support of public key authentication with SSH. Admins love WinSCP support for portable operation using a configuration file instead of registry entries, suitable for operation from removable media.
