WinMerge is a tool for visual difference display and merging, for both files and directories. It is highly useful for determining what has changed between file versions, and then merging those changes. WinMerge has Unicode support, Flexible syntax coloring editor, Visual SourceSafe integration, and Windows Shell integration. Regexp filtering for filenames and lines. Side-by-side line difference and highlights differences inside lines. A file map shows the overall file differences in a location pane. The user interface is translated into several languages.
What's new in this version: Version 2.14.0 fixed the bug when shell extension uses unquoted program path.

Pros
It's free and open source. It has plugin support. With the xdocdiff plugin you can quickly compare MS Word and Excel documents (.doc, .docx, .xls, .xlsx) as plain text. Integrates well with Tortoise CVS/SVN. Excellent performance.
Cons
Plugins are disabled by default. xdocdiff plugin is a separate download. UI is a bit dated. No support for 3-way compare/merge operations.
Summary
An invaluable tool once you have it set up the way you want it. Take a look at KDiff3 if you need to do 3-way merges.

This tool provides a FAST, easy-to-use, friendly interface for diffing files. Additionally, it has never failed me. It has never crashed and/or corrupted my files.

There are none that come to mind.

I have to deal with 100s of files for the websites I build and this utility is one of my most important. The keyboard commands make this better than most merge utilities.
Cons
Nothing. I love this software. And its free! Its a crime. I would pay good money for this tool.
Summary
A friend showed me this tool a few years ago and I owe him big. It has saved my tail so many times I can't say. I certainly like the diff tool that comes with SVN but every time I use it I say "dang I need to take two minutes to config SVN to use winmerge instead!". I love this tool!

Very powerful. Great interface makes it easy to use. Syntax colouring makes it easy to merge code. Alt-key commands for most (all?) operations, so can be very fast to review and merge on a change-by-change basis.
Cons
None found so far, except that it would be nice to be able to choose the default character set for xml files that don't specify it, but this is such an extreme condition that it isn't really worth implementing.
Summary
Haven't tried it under Vista yet, but it was amazingly useful under XP. Found it easier to use and more attractive than ExamDiff and other similar programs. Use it all the time for text and xml files. Downloading it for Vista now to help implement a Firefox searchplugin for Download.com.
