Editors' review

One of our favorite free office suites, Kingsoft Office, is now WPS Office 2014, with an all-new look and new tools. It's still widely compatible with other office suites, tools, and document formats, including Microsoft Word. WPS Office bundles a powerful word processor (WPS Writer), a spreadsheet tool (WPS Spreadsheets), and a presentation manager (WPS Presentation) with a variety of support utilities. WPS Office 2014 Beta 1 works across many platforms, including mobile devices.

Pros

New look, familiar feel: An updated (and customizable) look borrows features and design elements from Web browsers and word processors to create an attractive, efficient workspace in each tool.

Templates: Free templates are available online for PowerPoint, Office, Education, Business, Reports, Resume, Charts, and more.

Visible means of support: Tips and guides, a support center, shortcut keys, and other resources are, in most cases, either front and center or a click away.

Awesome powers: The new and improved WPS Spreadsheets supports "one million rows."

Mobile support: WPS Office 2014's mobile versions let you use the same apps across different platforms.

Cons

Good, but: Users expecting a free version of Microsoft Office won't be disappointed by WPS Office 2014, but it isn't an exact duplicate.

Bottom Line

WPS Office 2014 Beta 1 is an excellent productivity suite, particularly because it does so much for free. There's no denying it's not Microsoft Office, however close it comes, but if price is a major consideration, WPS Office 2014 Beta 1 is an excellent option.

"Kingsoft Office Free - it's all you need"

    June 27, 2014   |   By MickSheila

Version: Kingsoft Office Free 2013 9.1.0.4550

    Pros

    1. It's free

    2. Compatible with MS Office

    3. Elegant interface

    Cons

    1. Not as many file types as it should be

    Summary

MS Office is the best Office suite by far. Full stop. MS Office is a real professional tool. Unrivaled. Full stop. But...

It is too bundled. Too complicated. It has become a system on its own. Expensive. And it is too large.

One can argue that an average user does not use event 10 per cent out of the MS Office's capabilities. An average user is not about to write books or to work on complicated spreadsheets. All they need is to write a simple text, to do some basics on presentations or calculations and that's it. People don't need several hundred dollars or so office suite just to write simple texts occasionally, to make simple tables or something like that.

That's why an average user needs an alternative to MS Office. That's where we come to the question what alternative?

AbiWord? Nice try. Really. People put lot of effort. But it is too simple. Compatibility with MS Office files is almost non-existent. If you open any formatted .doc file, for instance, in AbiWord, no one can guarantee you it will look exactly as in MS Office. Something might go wrong.

OpenOffice? It is a serious Office suite. In some aspects, it surpasses MS Office. And it's free. But, again, compatibility with MS Office files is an issue. Most of the people still use MS Office and you really need something compatible. OpenOffice is not what you need. It loses some of MS Office's formatting when files are open in OpenOffice. In adddition to that, it still does not have an option to save files in .docx format.

LibreOffice? Step ahead compared to OpenOffice. It's brilliant. Useful. Nice interface. Even has the option to save in .docx format, for instance. But again, try to open, say, a MS Office created spreadsheet, and see for yourself.

That's where we come to Kingsoft Office Free (KSOF). Not only it looks like MS Office, but it is free, and what's most important to many people - it is quite compatible with MS Office. Opening, for instance, a .docx file or .xlsx file is a piece of cake. It looks as the same as in the MS Office. Will you find discrepancies? Of course. KSOF is not MS Office after all. But for an average user, it's all you need. And do not forget, it's free! Don't forget it's not an overload to your system. It occupies hundreds of MBs on your HDD compared to MS Office's GBs.

So, just download it and install and... do your work!

    "My Office Suite now."

    June 13, 2014   |   By jal9904

Version: Kingsoft Office Free 2013 9.1.0.4550

    Pros

    Lots of fonts.
Ability to open more than one document with tabs.
    Few themes.
Similar to Microsoft Office but with more fonts and better design.

    Cons

Not much, but I want the ability to save in more file formats.

    Summary

I used to use LibreOffice, also on Download.com. I now use Kingsoft office instead. I like the design and features.

    "Spectacular! Fantastic!"

    May 26, 2014   |   By pickycustomer

Version: Kingsoft Office Free 2013 9.1.0.4550

    Pros

    See summary below.

    Cons

Kingsoft is based in Hong Kong as in China. (My research shows no spyware.)
    Does not support ODF format.

    Summary

If you have ever used MS Office switching to Kingsoft Office Free (KSOF) is as easy as can be. KSOF offers a tabbed interface, supports most, if not all, MS Office formats. KSOF has a capable built-in spellchecker and can save to PDF format. Like most free office suites KSOF cannot edit PDF documents. KSOF has a small HDD footprint and is easy to install. KSOF opens to a "homepage" offering templates which also contains information about updates and a small amount of advertizing. The "homepage" also has links to the online "user manual" and other "tips and guides".

If you desire a solid free MS Office compatible office suite I highly recommend Kingsoft Office Free.

"Free and All I Need =)"

    May 10, 2014   |   By Rateara

Version: Kingsoft Office Free 2013 9.1.0.4550

    Pros

~ Is a great alternative to MS Office.
~ The skins/themes make it so much easier for my eyes to absorb.
~ It is Free! with no nagging to buy the Professional version which is only under $70! Which if your a full user of this great product you might as well buy it, even though the free version has everything I need anyway.

    Cons

    no at all.

    Summary

    Thank you Kingsoft!
    This software is a keeper.

    "really good!"

    April 27, 2014   |   By JohnnyMiri

Version: Kingsoft Office Free 2013 9.1.0.4514

    Pros

this product is fast and stable, operates very like MSOffice, but is snappier. It only provides word processing, spreadsheets and presentation software but does an amazing job with those. I like it and it is much cheaper than MSOffice. It does some stuff better. It is very well focussed on education, better tools for TOCs, endnotes, references etc.

    Cons

Still to much Chinese. A lot of dialogues are presenting me stuff in simplified HAN, although all the English stuff is there as well. This localisation of software needs to be improved. Having said that, it is only an eyesore and in no way affects the performance or ease of use of the interface.

    Summary

If you are a student on a budget this will DEFINITELY work for you. I've tested it over and over and it does all it's supposed to do. If you have a small business with a few employees it is a great affordable solution. I am surprised at the thoroughness of development and innovation here, it does some things that the competition cannot do. The functionality of the tools for spreadsheets is great.

For anybody who uses Linux, it is available from the company's website completely for free, gratis... (as in free beer). However, Linux users, it is not free software, for tinkering about with, and you have to sign an EULA license agreement not to change the software or remove logos etc. etc.

    Updated on Apr 27, 2014

I must mention that it does not work with file formats other than Microsoft standards (doc, docx, xls, xlsx, etc + its own native formats) Hence, it will not open ods, odx files from open sources or other file formats like .rtf
If this is a problem for you, then it's not worth trying.
But I am honestly surprised by this software and find it a true alternative to some of the industry standard offerings out there.

"Best MS Office H&S alternative for home users."

    March 26, 2014   |   By ZetotoNitouhei

Version: Kingsoft Office Free 2013 9.1.0.4514

    Pros

    - Free
    - Can download applications separately
    - Lightweight (just over 100 MB for whole Free suit)
    - Easy to use UI, and is interchangeable with traditional UI
    - Highly compatible with MS Office file types, even the newer (albeit a little buggy)
    - Export to various formats
    - Resource friendly

    Cons

    - No real-time collaboration built in

    Summary

Kingsoft Office Free 2013 should be the office suit of choice for home users. Why should you pay for MS Office Home & Student when you can get Kingsoft Office free edition that does almost everything MS Office H&S does? The free edition offers almost every tool H&S has.
Those who hate the Ribbon UI can appreciate to have the option to switch to the traditional toolbar UI.
The suit is surprisingly compatible with the new Office Open XML file format (.docx, .xlsx, .pptx), although it might display files saved in this format a little incorrectly.
What should be added is built-in real-time collaboration, as Microsoft has started to do with the subscription-based Office 365.
Overall, Kingsoft Office Free 2013 is the suit to go for any basic home user and for any school students that don't need the extra tools offered by Microsoft's Office.

    "Too much bugs!"

    March 21, 2014   |   By Sissy85

Version: Kingsoft Office Free 2013 9.1.0.4514

    Pros

    - nice user interface (either ribbon, or menus)
    - quite fast

    Cons

    - too much bugs!!!!!

    Summary

Compared to a good! free office suite such as SoftMaker FreeOffice, Kingsofts compatibility with Microsoft Office is upgradeable. So is its speed, memory consumption, and particularly its reliability. Kingsoft Office has many annoying bugs, e.g.:

    - decimal point format hardcoded to use dot instead of comma (bad luck for most Europeans)
    - insert / overtype apparently not working
    - modifies regional settings already set on the system, making big trouble for other apps
    - ui and dictionaries only in Chinese, or English
-under Windows XP sp3, printing of DOC and XLS files is not possible
    - wrong date format in XLS files Excel: files saved with MS Excel lose date format (dd.mm.yyyy is opened as mm/dd/yyyy)
    - crashes often when opening XML formats
    - and so much more.
