This well-designed defrag application improves hard drive performance through intelligent file placement. UltimateDefrag's dual-pane interface helpfully displays blocks in a more realistic hard drive-shaped, and color-coded map. Most users will pick up this application without the need of the Help file.
Operating UltimateDefrag takes the press of just a couple of buttons. One analyzes your hard drive to discover the extent of the file fragmentation. The next step depends on your needs. You choose to implement any of five defragmentation methods. Each method moves files based on simple rules enabled through quickly set options. Users can select from defragging fragmented files only, consolidating files and folders, or placing last used or last accessed files and folders to inner or outer tracks. An automatic defrag option lets the application control the process. Click a radio button to choose the method and press Start. We found UltimateDefrag average in speed, but more versatile than most in this genre.
On first run, this application requires users to answer question that affect system performance without mention of how performance will be affected. The program also fails to display an estimated time to completion timer. Nevertheless, intermediate to advanced users will find UltimateDefrag an often-used tool.
Publisher's description
From DiskTrix :More than just a defragger, UltimateDefrag is also a hard drive file placement optimizer that enables you to defrag and place your files in the areas on your hard drive where you achieve maximum performance. 80% of the time you only use 20% of the files on your hard drive. UltimateDefrag places your rarely used files out of the way and onto the slower performing areas of your hard drive making your drive perform like a new, almost-empty drive. Version: UltimateDefrag Freeware Edition 1.72
Pros: Seems to work quickly. Flexible, with bells and whistles, though you will have to read the manual in order to use all the optimizing options wisely.
W XP SP3, Seagate Free Agent external backup HD
Cons: The time remaining meter is sometimes wildly erratic.

"The search is over. Time to replace the standard defragmentier
"Pros: What can I say????
1. It will defrag your disk no matter how much free space you have.
2. It is faster than the default one.
3. You can choose where to place files and folders for faster access.
4. It comes with the FULL manual.
5. It really boosts performance.
6. It can be compared with DiskKeeper.
7. It IS FREE!
8. You do not need to restart windows to defrag your drive.
It is a DiskKeeper class product. It has a huge performance difference to the standard windows defragmenter, the results can be seen instantly after defrag.
I am running a music studio and I have music instrument samples up to a gigabyte each. After difragging with this beauty (I could not defrag them at sufficiently with windows one and AT ALL with Auslogics Disk Defrag) the performance went up the roof.
Just install it, you will be amazed.

Version: UltimateDefrag Freeware Edition 1.72
"Great Defragger at a Great Price"
Pros: UltimateDefrag is much better than the standard Windows defragger. This offers the ability to optimize the file placement to improve disk performance. There are several extra features like scheduled defrags and boot-time defrags to deal with those locked files. Power users will like it since it has so many options on how to defrag the drive. The circular drive map is also a nice touch since it gives a visual representation that more closely matches a drive platter.
Cons: The large amount of options may be a bit overwhelming to the user. Fortunately, there is an auto setting, but users may not know to select that one since it's not the default option. The user interface can be confusing to some people due to it's orientation towards power users. I found the defrag process to be a bit slow, but it was probably a result of the thoroughness of the file placement optimization. Finally, the estimated remaining time is completely inaccurate. It estimated that it would be done within a few minutes for half an hour.

Version: UltimateDefrag Freeware Edition 1.72
"Excellent well-conceived tool"
Pros: It moves files to where they are optimal, closing up all the little gaps other free defraggers leave behind. This is significant next time large (ie, DVD) files are loaded. Great freeware tool from someone who knows how to do it right.
Cons: It is slow, especially the first optimization, but it is being thorough to do properly what should be done.
