    "OpenOffice"

    April 19, 2006   |   By Never``

    Version: ThinkFree Office 3.1.0691

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Hey if im going to fork over 50$ for an office application, I want to know how it looks when its running. With Zero screen shots on first glance I am positive I will not buy this. Besides, OpenOffice has screen shots and is 50$ less.

I Prefer NeoOffice / OpenOffice2 (x11) which are faster (even NeoOffice) and really more compatible and free.

This was SUPER Sloooooooow. My paid for version 2.0 is about half as slow, so I just decided to trash them both because I have MS Office, AppleWorks, and more. I didn't need this wart hanging around never getting used.

"Can't even allow legit paid customers to download!"

    December 23, 2004   |   By seamusphan

    Version: ThinkFree Office 2.3.0417.64

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Having been their customer for so long since their launch of the product (though hardly used it as it is so SLOW), I thought I should at least download this 2.3 version. Typed in login details and it just keep bouncing me back to the "error" page. What lousy website design and no regard for PAID customers.

BTW, I echo other Mac friends here. Get NeoOfficeJ, what a breeze, and earns itself the rightful use of the word "free". ThinkFree might really want to consider renaming itself "ThinkPay50Bucks" or something to avoid any misunderstanding.

I guess I should consider my 50 bucks a nice lesson, and now, time to go back to the nice and FREE (ThinkFree guys - read "free") NeoOfficeJ.

    "Too slow"

    August 07, 2003   |   By macdmcg

    Version: ThinkFree Office 2.2.0417.48

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I tried this new version for two days and found it to be unusable on my PowerBook G4 with 512 RAM with OS 10.2.6 because it takes forever to launch and open documents. Even the spellchecker took over 15 seconds to fire up.

This is disappointing because this developer does provide prompt and courteous tech support.

When working in the program, it took upwards of two minutes each to open PowerPoint and Word documents. And the launch is extremely slow. I even followed tech supportâ??s directions for deleting and reinstalling the application and then restarting (not sure why a log out would not be adequate). But it still ran like cold molasses.

The culprit could well be Apple and their java engine. Java has always been a problem with Apple. Apple really needs to get on the stick and optimize the speed for Java based applications.

I think that Cocoa is the way to go with all applications for OS X if at all possible. I know this costs more for developers who want their apps to work in OS 9. But hey, the user wants the best and this application is no replacement for even the moderate MS Office X user. I think the interface is acceptable and the features adequate for the most part. But at the end of the day, it is just too slow to be practical for daily use.

    "Not bad. One to watch"

    Summary

I've been using thinkfree for about a week now. Overall it is a competent office package but many power users will lack some important features, especially in the spreadsheet area. I see this as slightly more appropriate than Appleworks even though it is slower. I believe it's slowness comes from its heavy use of java in its architecture. This makes it much more easy to port to other platforms. I am, for the most part, happy with its performance on my 500 mhz cube. I also like the fact that their document format is very html/xml centric making simple web pages butt-simple to do.

    "Tried It Again"

    Version: ThinkFree Office 2.2.0417.48

    Summary

I like to go out of my way and look for anything good to say about ThinkFree Office, OpenOffice, AppleWorks, et al but I'm still struggling to find much good to say if it will be used by college students or in a business/profession. AppleWorks 6 remains the best tool at reasonable price for students through high school. Many college students will discover their professors won't accept work done with it. Think Free is still far too slow. It lacks several key features and it does *not* exchange files with Office other than the very simplest ones. I previously tried it on a PowerBook G4 867MHz 640MB (12 inch). Far too slow. I don't see much difference in this version on a PowerMac G4 DP 1.25GHz (MDD) with 1.5GB and its much faster drive. Basic things like formatting and kerning, the problems college students encounter with AW6, are little better. ThinkFree has come a long way and I definitely see improvement. But it's not ready for use for any purpose AW6 doesn't do better and is nowhere near being as usable as Mac Office X 10.1.4.

    "ThinkFree Office is"

    Version: ThinkFree Office 2.2.0417.48

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
A decent choice for poor students- up there with AppleWorks I think. It could be speedier but its a JAVA based application and as such it doesn't burn rubber like some more expensive tools do. It still takes a little too long to start a new Write document.

Quality is better and the app almost never crashes. It used to in the 2.0-2.1 days but much more sturdy now. I'll be renewing when my year is up on the server.

    Keep up the good work!
