Editors' review

Spotflux is a free encrypted VPN client that routes your Internet traffic through a series of secure servers that mask your actual IP and make it virtually impossible to trace the connection back to your computer. Unlike some VPN clients, Spotflux is easy enough for anyone to use.

Spotflux has a unique Setup wizard that offers more options than most installers, including extra software we declined to install. The first thing Spotflux did when it launched was to secure our Internet connection by changing our settings to conform to the secure network's servers. Our browser opened with our secure connection (you can change that option in the program's Settings) but it took a few reloads before we could load any Web page; in fact, we had to close Spotflux and reopen it to access Web pages with our default browser, Chrome. It's almost impossible for an Internet connection routed through multiple secure VPN servers to be as fast as your normal broadband connection, and we noticed a bit of a lag in our browsing with Spotflux activated, though it's not really a concern since even our slowest sites loaded quickly enough -- certainly fast enough that we didn't think about disabling Spotflux right away, as has so often been the case with secure VPN clients. A system-tray icon let us check Spotflux's status at any time simply by hovering the cursor; right-clicking produced a menu that let us disable Spotflux's secure connection, access the program's Settings, and Quit the program. The Settings are basic but useful, such as languages, startup behavior, and proxies. Spotflux doesn't have a Help file in the usual sense, but the program is so easy to use, and a Support tab on the Settings dialog generates Support Bundles.

Securing your Internet connection helps protect your privacy and anonymity, and it blocks Web trackers and those all-too-personalized ads, too. It even protects against infected Web sites. Spotflux made all that as easy as any tool we've tried, and it doesn't slow your browsing enough to make you want to quit it.

"Good considering how quick and easy it is to use."

    June 10, 2014   |   By lov3m3tal

    Version: Spotflux 2.10.5

    Pros

Ease of use, quick no hassle install, relatively fast browsing, minimal advertisements, reasonably priced "Premium" (no ad) service

    Cons

As stated in the review by tagustin some of the advertisements can be a little racy. However, they do not contain any nudity. It could be considered "PG-13"

    Summary

An awesome solution for my not so tech savvy mother.

    "Offensive ads"

    May 10, 2014   |   By tagustin

    Version: Spotflux 2.10.5

    Pros

Didn't try the product, see Cons below.

    Cons

Even before I could finish installing the program (registering my computer), several pop-up ads of very graphic sex acts came up. Totally inappropriate for young people.

    Summary

I don't mind a few ads on freeware, but only ads for general patronage. Obviously, the general public is not the target market for this program.

"Works greatly and is amazing to use"

    April 29, 2014   |   By hunainahmed116

    Version: Spotflux 2.10.5

    Pros

It probably works better that Hotspot as it doesn`t cause slowing of network

    Cons

The bad thing it has that the Virtual IP is of US and causes a bit lag but they have their own servers which if blocked the software would become useless .

    Summary

    Great to use

    "Effective if properly configured"

    April 11, 2014   |   By neilmak

    Version: Spotflux 2.10.3

    Pros

    * Properly configured (in conjunction with a public DNS) it works well
    * Fast, with minimal disruption to web response times
    * Usually sets a US proxy (useful for non-US users):
    - can order and deliver to US forwarding addresses
    - can access Hulu etc
    * Free

    Cons

    * Have to also setup PC to use public DNS (OpenDNS, Google etc)
    * If not setup as above (if ISP is DNS server) it leaks DNS requests to local ISP
    * Have to turn-off for online banking, some payment services and uTube
    * Have to turn-off for non-US credit card orders (IP address does not match credit card country)
    * Can raise false hacking alarms with some webmail providers (because your access IP is different each time)
    * Need to test for DNS leakage after installing (cannot just install-n-go)

    Summary

Set up carefully, combined with a public DNS server, it performs well (and for free)

Spotflux spawns annoying pop-up adverts, but they can be suppressed with Adblock.

    "Not Impressed"

    March 13, 2014   |   By atunis58041

    Version: Spotflux 2.10.0.31

    Pros

    Unknown effectiveness

    Cons

Seemed to significantly slow browsing, much more so than suggested by company website

    Summary

Don't bother with this - I switched to Hotspot Shield, and browsing speed seems much faster.

"Simple to use, Good speed, but it isn't perfect. YET."

    January 08, 2014   |   By moosa32365

    Version: Spotflux 2.9.17

    Pros

    -Extremely easy to use GUI.
    -Fast bandwidth speed.
    -Reliable.

    Cons

-Sometimes doesn't work. keeps reconnecting (probably downtime).

-Doesn't disconnect when closed unless you manually press the disconnect button.

    Summary

Ads.. Ads should not be an issue here. Its a FREE software.. What do you expect from it? Oh and its just ONE ad on the bottom of a page which can be closed with ONE simple click of a button. I don't know if there are more than just one but if there are: AdBlock.

Don't cry over ads. If you were trying to run a free software. you would be forced to do the same. Deal with it. Otherwise but premium.

Im Rating it 4/5 but to somewhat counter the kiddies who rated it 1/5, I gave an extra 0.5/5.

    TL:DR :
    Get SpotFlux. Totally worth it.

    "Good and Bad"

    December 24, 2013   |   By djk2000

    Version: Spotflux 2.9.17

    Pros

    HotspotShield vs Spotflux

    Cons

HotspotShield annoys users through too many cookies, ads and pop-ups. I hate it.

    Summary

Spotflus doesn't but it changes your computer"s sub-dns address to 4.4.4.4 and 4.4.2.2.

"Works Well On My Wired Connection !"

    December 12, 2013   |   By tonester59

    Version: Spotflux 2.9.17

    Pros

Extremely easy to use ; no noticeable speed lag ; ad supported, but Ad-Block Plus blanks their content and one mouse-click and their gone.

    Cons

Again, ad-supported. I have only used it on my LAN connections, so it may perform differently on WiFi. Naturally, if you use a filter, such as OpenDNS, it will disconnect from it's servers negating any benefits the filters may provide.

    Summary

As stated above, I am not currently using any WiFi connected devices

As stated above, I'm not currently using any WiFi connected devices (I'm old-school and avoid it when possible - it's just friggin' radio waves which can be a security and privacy nightmare), but I can highly recommend it for LAN connections. For WiFi, I really can't say, but it's SO easy to use you really should give it a try.
