Editors' Review

Imagine Regmon on steroids, and you'll have a glimpse of this home-run hitting process watchdog. Process Monitor's simple spreadsheet-like interface displays processes through a user-created filter. The interface lacks simple single-click column sorting, however, columns are easily shown or hidden.

Process Monitor displays an extensive amount of information that will appeal mainly to advanced users. Context-clicking a process offers a pop-up menu of options to display additional information or affect the process. The pop-up is also available as the toolbar Event menu. Other pull-down menus manipulate the great amount of information to highlight trends. A button bar offers single-click icons for the most used commands. Three commonly used filters appear on the bar to show Registry Activity, File System Activity, or Process and Thread Activity.

Intermediate to advanced users looking for a better understanding of their system will want to test this freeware executable. Process Monitor will quickly find a place in their toolbox.

"Very powerful, awesome, but VERY resource intensive."

Very good at discovering the activities of an installation program. Really unlocks the mysteries. I have used this to find where a installation program is downloading the temporary installation files to install the program it's hired to install, so I can copy them off for offline installation later.

Is VERY memory intensive and can be very CPU intensive. Best not to enable 'Auto Scroll' if it's slowing down on you.
Could have an automatic write to disk function to reduce pagefile usage as the # of events increase in millions.
If you save the activity, compress it with 7z to drastically reduce the file size about 20:1.

When I use Sysinternals Process Monitor to monitor all IO activity when installing a large program and I leave all the filters off, so everything is captured, RAM & pagefile usage goes through the roof after some time.

For instance, I am having it monitor the install of the huge program that is Visual Studio Community 2015. It has been going for about an hour and my pagefile is 47.8GB used out of 55.6GB pagefile size. Luckily I have an SSD so the system is still usable, though very slow.

When I go to the 'details' pane of Task Manager (Windows 8+), for procmon64.exe it shows Working set(memory) hovering between 60-90MB. Commit size is about 375MB. So Task Manager does not show the huge page file usage procmon64.exe is using, interesting.

EDIT: After some time, when the install was finally finishing many hours later (thanks to constant pagefile swapping to/from the SSD, and VS 2015's installer is very very inefficient), procmon64.exe's working set(memory) was ~700MB and Commit Size was 821MB. Under 'Performance' tab -> 'Memory' 'Committed'; 73.4GB/89.5GB, my SSD was running out of space with a 90GB pagefile!
Procmon64.exe had recorded a bit over 120 million events. The saved .pml file was at 62GB , though 7z compressed to 3GB.

This program can really eat up pagefile space, be careful.
A few pics.
