Editors' Review

Although we were impressed by the flexibility of Portal VADO (Virtual Assistant Desktop Organizer), we were disappointed by the complexity of its interface. The program initially runs in a small drag-and-drop window for cataloging files, after which the program launches another interface for file management and quick search. The interface allows you to create your own categories and browse the files to be cataloged. You can even preview images before cataloging and create descriptors for the catalogs to enhance its search capabilities. Although its search utility has more options than is common for such relatively simple programs, its search area is limited to the folders containing the user-specified categories. Although this application produces accurate results and provides flexibility for disk management, we were disappointed it did not mention that the cataloged files are moved from their original locations rather than being copied. There is a help file, but it locked up in our tests. This application does not come with an uninstaller, but the download is an executable, so you can save and run it from whatever location you wish and remove it by manually deleting the file. Since the registered version is $27, users should consider other applications before buying.

"Don't waste your time."

March 19, 2004

 |  Version: Portal VADO 1.1

Summary

This program was squirrely. It ended up moving files from several directories under a tree with no warning that it was doing so. Emptied out my regular directories and put all the files in one catalog directory.

One would think a cataloger would leave files where you put them and simply build the catalog.

Let the user beware. It does not even have an uninstall program. It's now got its files and DLLs all over the place on my machine. I was a sucker for a promise of functionality
