Denied entrance to heaven, you must battle hordes of undead warriors to save the world while discovering the mystery of your own destiny. Although Painkiller definitely has an old-school vibe reminiscent of Wolfenstein or Doom, the detailed graphics and advanced physics engine are anything but. Three levels from the single-player game offer loads of supernatural first-person-shooter fun.

The demo offers three of five possible weapons from the full game, each of which has two types of attack. Collecting the souls of the slain undead boosts your health, while tarot cards give your character special fighting or protection abilities. The 3D environments are gorgeous, with details and explosions that contribute to the nightmarish scenario.

One downside of the demo is that it lacks save functionality, although once you pass a level, you can restart at the next. The most difficult gameplay setting, Trauma, is also not available. Although the game is still in development, movement and hit detection could definitely be improved--jumping is difficult to control, and enemies sometimes cause damage even though they obviously miss. These are all minor quibbles, and we highly recommended the demo to any fans of first-person shooters whose systems meet the minimum requirements.

Publisher's description

From DreamCatcher Interactive :

Stranded in a place between heaven and hell, your time of judgment is at hand. The underworld is on the verge of unholy war, and you are but a pawn in the infernal battle. As you fight for your purification, the truths behind the deceptions are revealed.

Painkiller follows a recently deceased and heavily armed soul blasting his way through purgatory, and features over-the-top Havok 2.0 physics to make the first-person action even more frantic. The demo gives you a glimpse of three locations in purgatory and three of the game's five dual-mode weapons.
