Windows Explorer is a pretty basic application, and if you've ever tried to do any serious file management with it, you've probably wished for an alternative that's easier to work with. NexusFile is just such an alternative. This flexible file manager lets you work with files in ways that would be impossible with Windows Explorer.

The program's interface is fairly intuitive, although aesthetically it might not be everyone's cup of tea. White and colored type on a black background isn't the easiest thing to read, and although the program is skinnable, this is only true of the outer portions of the interface. Still, this is a relatively minor complaint, as NexusFile is easy to navigate and work with. The interface is divided into two panes, and users can navigate to any location on their computer in either pane and then drag and drop files between them. The program also has a series of helpful buttons across the top, allowing users to quickly access their desktop or documents, or view all audio, video, or image file in a given location. We were disappointed to find that NexusFile doesn't have a Help file, although there is an online forum where users can ask questions if they're really in a bind. Overall, we found NexusFile easy to use, and we think it's a significant improvement over Windows Explorer.

NexusFile is free. It comes as a ZIP file and is accessible after extraction with no need for installation. We recommend this program to all users.

"Useful features but don't throw out explorer yet."

July 21, 2011  |  By mss627

 |  Version: NexusFile 5.3.1.5460

Pros

Dual pane presentation. The ability to store directory locations. Useful FTP and folder compare functions.

Cons

Struggles in the UAC environment of Windows 7. Some simple explorer shortcuts don't translate.

Summary

This is a very useful utility. Unfortunately it doesn't complete replace windows explorer. I find myself still leaning on explorer when it come to file removal. Even when run in administrator mode NF has problems removing files. Many simple explorer shortcuts (e.g. select all) doesn't work in this program. Despite all the neat features I always wind up opening explorer during sessions. There have been updates that have eliminated some of the faults but there are still enough irritating quirks that keep me from using this program exclusively.

"A "Must Have" For Your Toolbox"

March 11, 2011  |  By PJFTL

 |  Version: NexusFile 5.2.4.5245

Pros

Versatile file manipulation, view can be either a single or dual window, folder content comparison, has the ability to add files to an archive, and a great file renaming function

Cons

Some people may be crazy about the default colors

Summary

This utility has saved me alot of time by being able to batch tasks like renaming a lot of files with a single click and can handle a more than one condition for renaming. Being able to join a lot of smaller files into one for easier analsys and in the format you want. I had a bit of a learning curve as to what function was where, but the more I worked with it the easier it became and the organization made more sense. While I don't always use it, having the ability to have a window on the left with a view of a folder and another window on the right with a different folder displayed is very handy and time saving.

Some of the options you can configure are things like assigning function keys to perform certain tasks, you can change the colors from the default colors, default folder locations (documents, music, etc.), your view of folders and files, external archive programs, and more.

I've found NexusFile fills in a lot of the gaps Windows doesn't provide and for those it does, makes the use of them a lot easier to do. I personally have no problems recommending NexusFile to anyone and have recommended it to my friends who had the same needs I do.

"Works great"

January 22, 2011  |  By ers2121

 |  Version: NexusFile 5.2.4.5245

Pros

Faster than windows explorer at moving files, even on my slow-poke.

Cons

None so far.

Summary

I like the ability to move massive files between hard drives, it did it quickly and without errors, unlike Windows. Also liked the ability to change colors in Options for files and folders, allows you to see at a glance what you're dealing with.

"Better than Windows Explorer (not saying much)"

July 04, 2010  |  By mss627

 |  Version: NexusFile 5.1.4

Pros

Dual window configuration.

Cons

Dumb color scheme. Not that much better than Windows Explorer. Difficulty sorting columns.

Summary

I don't know why windows doesnt allow multiple windows. This program allows two. Not a lot of features other than a few nice shortcuts. I'm not sure who came up with the color schemes but boo. It would also be nice to sort colomns without accessing the tools menu but hey it's free.

"Windows Explorer Replacement"

June 15, 2010  |  By badbadbad911

 |  Version: NexusFile 5.1.4

Pros

I am using Vista, and find this program much easier and quicker to navigate and browse around my files and folders. Also has an array of helpful features, such as: disk cleanup, one click file rename, FTP, plus much more

Cons

The design is slightly lacking, but it's the way the program works that matters, not what it looks like

Summary

I highly recommend this to anyone considering an alternative to WinExplorer

"Fantastic altnernative to Windows Explorer"

May 28, 2010  |  By badbadbad911

 |  Version: NexusFile 5.1.3

Pros

MUCH faster than Win Explorer. Nice looking GUI. Built-in FTP upload facility AND download facility. Extremely efficient Disk cleanup (built-in). Very fast to load.... I could go on and on!

Cons

Nothing really

Summary

This is an awesome alternative to Windows Explorer... you use it to access any files in your C Drive (my docs, my computer, program files, etc) - and it blows Win Explorer out of the water! It is super fast and super easy to use. I now mainly only use NexusFile when browsing through my files... it's much easier and faster than Windows.... AMAZING program, I highly recommend

"Ugly. I could hardly face testing it."

March 31, 2010  |  By cyberpaz

 |  Version: NexusFile 5.1.3

Pros

It functions like most other explorer substitutes and ftp uploaders

Cons

Wow! It is ugly! Whatever happened to its graphical designer. Perhaps 3D glasses would make it seem nicer :-)

Summary

When will we get an explorer that looks great, even like a filing cabinet? This one has to be the worst colour scheme and font layout I have ever seen. Function is fundamental, I agree, but visuals matter.
