This program was designed to rival Notepad, but its functionality far surpasses the Windows standard. Metapad's interface is a minor facelift to Notepad, with icons and tool tips replacing plain text prompts. Under the menus, Metapad offers numerous improvements and increased functionality such as dual fonts, configurable tabs, and the ability to save to text, HTML, or source code formats such as Java. Metapad also supports an external viewer, such as a Web browser, to display hyperlinks.
The program loads very fast and requires a bare minimum of memory to run. It could easily replace Notepad on a user's system, but making it the default Windows text editor is not a simple process: the program FAQ lists three methods, none of which are for novices. Most users will prefer to load the program through a shortcut. Metapad has been around long enough for users to create language packs, spell check, and other add-ons. This program should be added to any Windows system, and will soon become the preferred text editor for novices and advanced users alike.
Publisher's description
From LiquidNinja :Metapad is a small, fast, 32-bit Notepad replacement. Not only does Metapad have almost every feature in Notepad, it contains many extra features that make it considerably more powerful than Notepad (for instance, unlimited file size, saved window placement, intelligent find and replace, external viewers, and useful keyboard shortcuts). Metapad is useful for Web site maintenance and simple programming tasks.

Version: Metapad 3.51
Pros: The best thing about Metapad is its size, approx ~50k. And because of this, it loads lightning fast. That is something I appreciate in a text editor. The features provided are excellent and some are quite an improvement over the standard notepad features. Notable ones are the Hyperlink Support and the Quick Buffers which are used for adding commonly used strings quickly.
Cons: It just doesn't have an ample amount of features to be a tool in my arsenal. Granted its only 50k but since the WinXP notepad came up, this product doesn't have much use for me. I prefer a bigger programmers editor with syntax highlighting and indentation. This is strictly a notepad replacement.

Version: Metapad 3.51
Pros: just what I have been looking for. This beats the pants off of notepad!
Cons: I couldn't figure out how to open multiple notes at once. How do you do that?

Version: Metapad 3.51
"THE Best Notepad Replacement. Period."
Pros: I've been using this freeware gem for four years now, and it is simply the best. All of the features you wound normally want or need in a notepad replacement plus it will read those RTF files, which most notepad replacements won't. Also like the fact that I can choose to not keep a recent files list. Most others don't give you this option. Must see all of the options - far too many to list her. Get it ! !
Cons: Absolutely nothing. It is truly a FIVE STAR app ! ! ! !

Version: Metapad 3.51
"It has several bugs and the author does not want to fix them :("
Pros: I have used it for years and also found some annoying bugs. So I have reported them and requested their fixes. So far, they are still open. Then I found TED Notepad (similar with more features) and probably closed the metapad for good.
Cons: Several things can not be undone, like replace all, tabify, untabify. Could not insert time, only time with date. Quick buffers are restricted to one line.
