CNET Editors' review
The developers behind MacJournal admit that you can use a traditional word processor or text editor for journaling--but they say that's like Lance Armstrong using a bike from Wal-Mart to race in the Tour de France. Aside from the fact that Armstrong would probably still kick butt on a Wal-Mart bike, they've got a point: MacJournal is one of the best journaling programs available for the Mac, with a huge range of features that are useful whether you're keeping a journal for yourself, taking notes for classes or meetings, organizing random snippets of info, or prepping blog posts offline.
MacJournal gives you a fairly intuitive, feel-good interface (especially its green-text-on-black, full-screen writing mode), and a ton of tools for organizing your thoughts and words, including a built-in calendar, good search function, a system of nested entries and journals, and keyword tags, labels, priorities, and other opportunities for annotation. You can include nearly any sort of content, from movies to PDFs to podcasts, and bloggers will like that its formatting translates well to HTML, with support for TypePad, Blogger, LiveJournal, and more. You also get password protection and encryption, integration with Apple's Mail, and a wide variety of export options, such as PDF, HTML, Word, and even iPod Notes.
The only major issue we can fault MacJournal for is the 15-day trial period, which is a little short for this sort of application, especially given its rich and complex feature set. This most recent version adds minor interface enhancements and assorted bug fixes.

"Really great software for me."
Version: MacJournal 6.0
Pros
Good organizing features.
Cons
Nothing to me mentioned.
Summary
I am happy with this feature-rich application. Good job, Mariner.
-
"nice app, thanks"
Version: MacJournal 6.0
Pros
- easy to use
- offers all features I wanted to have in such type of an app
- integration with blogsCons
- haven't found any for now
Summary
I like this app for its ease in use and presence of numerous features. It can take some time to check all of them, but all in all, it is better when app provides you with many features to choose from instead of one or two.

"The upgrade is poor."
Version: MacJournal 6.0
Pros
I used and loved this program for three years until the latest upgrade. Find an older version, before the upgrade, and use it, it's quite good. I'm stuck with the new version - not so good.
Cons
With the new upgrade, 6, the program eats information, erases weeks of entries and constantly asks you to make a new journal, when you really just want to add to the old one. I don't understand how any of the new enhancements work, the new version is not intuitive. Not a positive up grade at all. I'm searching for a new journaling program.
From the other reviews (thank you!) I will not wait for any help from Mariner.Summary
Choose carefully, this used to be a great program, but the upgrade is terrible.

"Should have listened to the reviews"
Version: MacJournal 5.2.5
Pros
I bought it bc of the its ability to sync w/ my Macjournal iphone app
Cons
Not a safe place for your work
Summary
I did as instructed and got most of my work back but lost some invaluable work.
Ive lost all faith in MacJournal and I should have listened to some of the reviews.
Im angry that Ive lost my work and will now have to waste more time transferring
all my info to a different program.
Ive been working on a mac and mac applications for over 10 years and Ive only experienced this
kind of information loss once and when it comes down to your work a one time loss is one too many.
If these bugs cant be resolved this product shouldnt be out. -
"Convenient, flexible personal journaling application."
Version: MacJournal 5.2.4
Pros
Flexibility, ability to save multiple entries and multiple diaries.
Cons
Frequent upgrades have been necessary. Text does not transfer directly to and from MS Word.
Summary
I like this product enough that I intend to purchase it. I write in MacJournal frequently and have enjoyed keeping a digital diary.

"15 days is not time enough 30 day trials are standard"
Version: MacJournal 5.2.3
Pros
I could use a journal and this one sounds great.
Cons
I can't give any app an evaluation and be fair by checking it in 15 days. So I for one will not waste our time by downloading it.
Summary
I have not downloaded this application yet. It sounds great but I have never tried to evaluate an app of this type in less that 30 days.

"Simply elegant"
Version: MacJournal 5.2.3
Pros
I've never used journaling software before, but I'm quite impressed with the ease of entry, the organization of information, and the wiki-linking features.
Cons
The ease of data formatting could use a bit of attention.
Summary
I've needed to be keeping a journal for my teaching reflection for years now, and this product has enabled me to get going on that. I'd say that's a rather strong endorsement!
-
"Poor Support"
Version: MacJournal 5.2
Pros
MacJournal is OK. I have used it for a year, and I had important work in it. When it crashed during an update install I was frantic.
Cons
It took 13 days and BEGGING on their support site for help. As soon as I got that mess fixed I went shopping for a new software, hopefully with decent support.
Summary
The worst support. When it crashes they don't care about you. They don't answer your emails, and then after 2 weeks, their "help" is an automatic rote response.

"Warning! Macjournal ate my hard drive"
Version: MacJournal 5.1.4
Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I've used MacJournal since it came out and have always loved it. BUT, last week, I noticed that my new 320 Mini was almost full and it had had less than 90 gigs on it. ( I'm running 6.2). I did all the usual stuff, Disc Utility, Onyx to clean caches and logs, etc. etc. Finally got a great program called Daisy Disc which shows what space programs were taking up. I was astounded to find that MacJournal was taking up 283 gigs!!!!! The data file alone was 6 gigs. I only use this as a text journal, no videos, images.
Took overnight to delete the program and everything and empty the Trash. I copied the the data files to an external drive in case I could retrieve the actual entries.
I checked my laptop, running Leopard, where I have MacJournal installed but seldom use, and it had grown to 60 gigs! Got rid of it there, too.
I've written to Mariner and have yet to receive even an acknowledgement of my problem.
So check your MacJournal files in your home library. -
"MacJournal is Tops! and Dan is The Man!"
Version: MacJournal 5.1
Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again, and again, and again... MacJournal has no equal. Dan sets the standard in my book for understanding the needs of the consumer. If you don't own MacJournal, you are missing more than you can imagine. It is simply the best in its class.
